Forest fires in Greece threaten tourists — tour operators

All tourists, vacationers now in Greece, are in absolute safety, forest fires do not threaten them, assured Thursday by representatives of the Greek tourism sector.

"At the moment, recorded only a few small fires, which are far away from all the tourist areas and fully monitored fire services of the country," — said in a statement the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE).

At the request of SETE, the Greek authorities have taken all measures of fire protection.

On the eve of reported serious forest fire near the city of Patras on the Peloponnese peninsula. To fight the fire was thrown more than 150 firefighters and 10 aircraft and helicopters. For a time the fire threatened two villages, dozens of people have been evacuated, and in a small area east of Patras emergency was declared. In this guest was not even close. As noted in the SETE, the Greek tourism industry hopes to beat this year, a record for the number of tourists arriving from Russia. According to the association, in 2011, visited Greece, 740 000 people, and in this season, the number of visitors from Russia so far has increased by 30%.
