"We have a strong desire to get a pygmy hippo at the zoo of Edinburgh — this was preceded by a very long negotiations. Pygmy hippopotamus — herbivorous mammal. He lives in the forest rivers of Sierra Leone and Liberia, Nigeria and Guinea. Adult male height at the withers less than 75 cm, length of 1.5 meters. The beast has a solitary lifestyle. In captivity, pygmy hippos live up to 35 years.

At home, the animals are endangered, with an estimated 1993 population of pygmy hippos natural no more than three thousand individuals, and current numbers are probably much smaller. Civil wars in the habitat type made it impossible to study and protection.
