Yakut scientists explore brain mammoth

Yuka — virtually the only well-preserved mammoth specimens

On the Day of Russian Science Yakut scientists have prepared another sensation: the world's first brain will be examined well-preserved baby mammoth. Yuka mammoth was discovered in the summer of 2010, and examined almost all sides. But the study of brain structure mammoth will be a world first.

As previously found the remains of ancient animals brain was absent due to drying or putrefaction. Even a skull could not guarantee the safety of the brain. And Yuka — virtually the only well-preserved mammoth specimens.

Studies will be held at the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Albert told reporters Protopopov, Ph.D., director of the study mammoths Academy Yakutia, will be held in February to hold craniotomy, retrieval and research of brain Yuki. However, this is not a quick process. Just the preservation of the brain inside the skull next few weeks. Only then body will carefully removed from the skull.

Brain Research Mammoth will hold the leading physiologists of the Russian Institute of Biomedical Problems, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, with the active participation of scientists of the Academy of Sciences and of the Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The mystery of the brain mammoth soon be revealed.

Unique Taimyr mammoth Korean scientists can clone!

This, scientists say, is a once in a hundred years. In Taimyr simple eleven boy discovered mammoth, but not simple! Lain in permafrost 30,000 years carcass, wonderfully preserved: with fragments of skin, meat, fat, and even some internal organs!

Scientists will soon revive the mammoth

Recently shocked the scientific world sensation — from biological samples Mammoth in Yakutia were isolated cell nuclei. That, in turn, gives us hope that in the carcass and left living cells. The details of the opening of the "KP" said Sergei Fedorov, member of the expedition, the head of department of the Museum exposition mammoth North-Eastern Federal University.

— It all started with the transmission channel NTV, — says Sergey Ye. — Before the New Year, we saw an interview of Dr. Hwang Usuk, Korean genetics from Seoul. The dream of his life — to clone a mammoth. We immediately began to establish contacts with like-minded and fund biotechnology SOOAM. And in March this year, our University has signed an agreement with the Koreans on long-term cooperation.

And in March this year, our University has signed an agreement with the Koreans on long-term cooperation.

August 8 this year, a large international group, which, in addition Yakuts and Koreans also included British, Swedes and Americans went to the area of the basin of the Yana River to get a mammoth biological material for genetic studies.

— Carving figurines from mammoth tusks — traditional fishing people of the north. Locals told us where to look for the remains of the mighty animals — says Sergei Fedorov. — We went to the area of Mount Muus Haya (translated as The Ice Mountain), which is located 50 kilometers from the village Cossack.

Incidentally, Muus Haya has another name — snotty. This unromantic name due to the fact that the ice periodically melts, mixing with the soil. The result is a gelatinous mass. Height is small — about 20 meters.

— This mountain is literally studded with natural and artificial passages, — says Sergey Ye. — Back in the Pleistocene period, there lived mammoths. Then the terrain has changed a lot over the plains "narosla" mountain. So we decided to go deep into it. We walked about 70 meters under the ground, then another ten meters by branch. Here's what we found an excellent example: the soft tissue mammoth skin, hair and fat-like substance.

In Korean colleagues at hand was a small portable laboratory. Wasting no time, they immediately took a cut from found material. Scientists have clung to the microscope and was stunned: in the preparation were clearly visible well-preserved cell nuclei.

— You see, the field of the microscope is not very good resolution, — Sergey Ye. — Nevertheless, the nuclei were seen very clearly. This gives some hope for the identification of living cells. Of course, talking about it is premature, we need more detailed analysis. Equipment such level in Yakutia, unfortunately, are not. Therefore it was decided to bring the samples in South Korea. Results of the study are likely to be available later this year.

BTW

In 2004, a baby mammoth found in Yakutia

Representative of prehistory found near the village of Ust-Nera in Oimyakon ulus Yakutia gold-landfill. Bulldozer removes the top layer of rock and bumped into blocks of ice, which shine through the remains of an animal. Alexander Volkov worker rescued ice. Unknown beast was mammoth. About finding immediately reported scientists from the Museum of Mammoth Yakutsk Academy of Sciences. Those urgent visit to Ust-Nera

"KP" phone the director of the Museum of Mammoth Peter Lazarev. Here's what he reported from the Yakut taiga

— On Thursday, I came to the place and found that at the death of the animal fell into a puddle, which soon froze.

— And how long ago did this happen?

— Typically, these remains are in layers dated to 15 — 40 thousand years.

— It really is baby mammoth?

Not quite. I think it was 1.5 — 2 years. Length remains 1.2 meters. Weight — 60 pounds. But found only the front part of the body. The head, part of the trunk and back. No front legs and back.

According to the decision taken by the Government of the Yakut people, who found the paleontological remains, should receive the award. Mammoth's head found in Ust-Yanskiy ulus, Hunter Vasily Gorokhov received 15 thousand dollars.

Once scientists will examination findings, the rewards will be transferred and the lucky bulldozer. According to experts, the amount of the premium can be up to 500 thousand rubles.
