Satanic symbol 666 comes from the Bible. In the Revelation of John, Ch. 13, art. 18 we read: "Here is wisdom. Anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of man: His number six hundred sixty-six."
Commentators have a common understanding and to who we have in mind in this puzzle. But almost all agree that the so-called "Gematria" may be the mechanism by which we can try to solve this riddle.
Gematria is an ancient method by which relate numeric and literal values to understand the hidden meaning of the word. Gematria is based on the fact that both the classical Greek and Hebrew had no special numerical notation, but instead used in the sign value of the letters.
Following this principle, the first letter of the alphabet corresponds to the numerical value of "one", the second letter — with a numeric value of "two" and so on. In this regard, each word in both languages can be read as a group of numbers. If we then calculate the sum, we get the number in the corresponding word. In the case of the names we have so-called "number of a man."
These numbers are used in cases where direct nomination (naming) is not convenient or danger.
Found in the city of Pompeii is a sign that a compelling example. The inscription reads (in Greek): "I love that, the number of which is 545." In this way love can find out what this inscription was written for her, but for others it has remained hidden, in particular that which of the many Greek women had specifically in mind.
It is assumed that, for the biblical human figure in Revelation 13.18 should do the same. The author probably did not want the name revealed to other people, so he hid it. At the same time, the Christian brothers name that is behind the numbers, opens easily.
But in the second century, St. Irenaeus confessed that he does not know what kind of person you mean by that number. He suggested three solutions, none of which, in the light of current research, is not entirely satisfactory. Throughout history offers numerous more or less satisfactory solutions.
Historians to the rescue
Among others mentioned Pope, John Knox, Martin Luther, and Napoleon, which assumes that the number of the beast 666. During the Second World War gave birth to the idea of someone that if we are starting with the letter "a" and taking it for "100" read a numeric value, that is, in this case "6" will correspond to the number "101" and so on , the total named Hitler, too, will be 666. But of all these solutions is the most likely one: if we write the name of Caesar Nero (this is the Greek form of the name of Him) in Hebrew, the numerical value of the word will be 666.
Moreover, this assumption is confirmed by the fact that one of the most respected biblical manuscripts under the code "C" (this is Ephraim, fifth century) gives instead of 666 the number 616, because this number is the Latin form of the name of Nero. In this case, both versions of the corresponding numerical value of his name, and therefore is a beast in the text to refer to one of the fiercest persecutors of the Church. In this case, however, is not as important to decide which of the clues to this puzzle is correct.
Gematria itself was later developed in many targeted at the numbers and types of magic. Already the ancient Greek temples were built in accordance with some gematric relations. Later reused diverse, but built on the principles of gematric ideas. For example, not only the words were calculated with the same sum and used to philosophical conclusions, but the message of the Spirit were reduced to numerical values compared with their names and cross-checked by keyword their message.
Paranoia around the code
In recent years, some fundamentalist and charismatic groups are trying to ascertain the approach of threatening the rule of the Antichrist to the fact that all products are now supplied with a barcode. They really show the bar code number 666 and bring it and the connection with the cited passage of Revelation of John. Each group of lines in the code stands for any number. Two thin lines correspond to the number 6. As if by chance all of the code is divided by three double lines, which are very reminiscent of two thin lines corresponding to six.
Thus, all of the code is divided into three sections. From this such religious groups, it is concluded that the three double lines in labeling scanner, in fact, are the number of the beast, and the use of bar code is not random, and embodies the realization of what is said in the passage from Revelation, which says that no one be able to buy or sell unless he has the number of the beast.
Of course, one would immediately reject this claim as religious fanaticism. But let's try to see if there is a serious reason to such an interpretation?
For this, we would have to go back to the way the Greeks and Jews wrote the numbers and figures. Greeks and Jews used the decimal system, but they used it differently than we do, because no one nor the others did not have the value "zero". Despite the fact that it was a decimal system, there was no position taken now zero. Therefore, to operate the decimal system, they needed more signs than us today, in a system where there are nine characters for digits plus zero.
For numbers up to 999, they needed our twenty-seven different characters, namely, the nine characters for simple numbers from 1 to 9, nine for the tens of thousands — from 10 to 100 and nine — for hundreds — from 100 to 900. Because they did not have zero, they could just as we write the same symbols hundreds, and increase their value by adding zero and thus change the character position within the number.
This means that they could not use the same symbol, for example, to refer to three, three hundred and thirty. Based on this, when you write the number 666 is not a three-fold repetition of six, but they had to use with different letters, the first of which meant a six hundred-sixty-second, and the third — six.
Based on this, we come to the conclusion that any speculation based on a threefold repetition of six, is correlated with a modern, current writing and has nothing to do with the actual biblical number.
