In Geneva, started the Seventh Review Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of Biological Weapons.
Its participants are 163 States. The Convention entered into force in 1975.
But, as the chairman of the Conference, the Dutch diplomat Ambassador Pal Van den Issel, now its delegates do not just supervision of the stocks of biological weapons.
"Bioterrorism — this is not a risk but a reality. And we have already seen examples of this. Review Conference will help strengthen the capacity of member states to respond to this threat. Many of the international organizations that deal with bioterrorism — World Health Organization, Interpol, the International Committee of the Red Cross, will participate in this meeting, "- he said.
In addition, the conference delegates in Geneva will review the current state of research in the biomedical sciences.
