Seminar on the protection of the snow leopard starts in the capital of Kyrgyzstan

An international seminar on the protection and conservation of the Red List snow leopard on Saturday starts in the capital of Kyrgyzstan, told RIA Novosti press-service of the government.

Snow leopard, or ounce — an endangered feline listed in the Red Book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. According to various sources, to date, the number of individuals in the wild range from 3.5 to 7000. In the highlands of the Tien Shan mountains in Kyrgyzstan, home to about a thousand of these graceful predators.

"During the seminar, which will be attended by representatives of the Governments of the habitat of the snow leopard, the international experts, representatives of non-governmental environmental organizations, as well as environmentalists and entrepreneurs will be considered national policies, strategies and action plans for the conservation of this endangered species," — said the source agency.

According to him, on the basis of national documents will form the basis of the Global Strategy for the snow leopard, which is expected to consider during the World Forum on Snow Leopard. It will be held in 2013 in Bishkek.

The event, which will be attended by representatives of 12 countries, including China, India, Afghanistan, Russia and the U.S., will last for three days.
