Steel production in Ukraine in the past year amounted to 32,911,000 tons, despite a decline of 6.9% compared to 2011, left the country for tenth place in the world ranking steel producer, according to the World Steel Association (World Steel Association).

Total steel production in the world in 2012 increased compared to 2011 by 1.2% — up to 1.517 billion tons.

At the end of last year, the world leader in the production of steel with the index 716.5 million tons (an increase of 3.1% in 2011) remained China. Joining him in the top 10 of the largest producers included the following countries: Japan (107.2 million tonnes in 2012, down 0.3% to 2011), the U.S. (88.6 million tons, up 2.5%), India (76.7 million tons, 4.3%), Russia (70.6 million tons, up 2.5%), South Korea (69.3 million tons, 1.2%), Germany (42, 7,000,000 tons, down 3.7%), Turkey (35.9 million tons, 5.2%), Brazil (34.7 million tons, 1.5%) and Ukraine (32.9 million tonnes — 6.9%).

It should be noted that the production industry, which employs dozens of companies, is a big part in Ukrainian exports to the country and forms an important part of foreign currency earnings.

For example, in 2012 the country's steel industry was cast 26,576,000 tons of finished steel, which is 6% less than in 2011. Production has fallen relative to the total rolled in 2011 by 9% — to 28.95 million tons, steel production — by 7% to 32,394,000 tons.

Pig iron production in 2012 relative to 2011 decreased by 1% — up to 28.513 million tons. Production of metal products decreased by 19% — up to 211 thousand tons. Pipe plants in Ukraine last year lost 9.4% of production — up to 2.014 million tons. At that mining companies have increased production of iron ore concentrate by 0.9% — up to 66.379 million tons.

Earlier, President Viktor Yanukovych said that a new impetus for the development of iron and steel sphere in Ukraine should be an increase in consumption in the domestic market, which will be part of a renaissance of the Ministry of Industrial Policy.
