Ten people were killed and over 13,000 were left homeless by the floods in Brazil. They were caused by heavy seasonal rains that hit the usually arid areas north-east of the country. Particularly affected states of Pernambuco and Paraiba, where the majority of the banks came out of the rivers, and in the mountainous areas have been numerous landslides and rock falls.
State of emergency was declared at the moment in the 26 cities in the region. The disaster caused significant damage to the state capital of Pernambuco — Recife city with a population of over 1.5 million people. Streams of water streamed into the city power transmission towers, leading to disruption of power supply.

The situation is complicated by the fact that the north-east of Brazil had not yet fully recovered from the May floods, when the states of Pernambuco and Alagoas homeless stayed a total of 18,000 people, according to ITAR-TASS.
