Earthquake in the Philippines: 43 people were killed. Photo

As a result of a strong earthquake in the Philippines today, killing at least 43 people. About 40 people remain missing, according to AFP.

Earlier, the U.S. Geological Survey reported that the Philippines has been a series of earthquakes, one of them a magnitude 6.8 — near the island of Negros, the second — in the same area, but the magnitude of 5.6. Then later followed by another magnitude 6.2.

Tremors were at a depth of 30-40 km, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 80 kilometers southwest of Cebu City. An earthquake with magnitude 5.2 occurred near the Philippine island of Mindanao.

The earthquake caused two landslides — in g.Guihulngan which destroyed about 30 homes and g.La Libertad. Tremors were felt in seven central provinces.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, announced the threat of tsunamis in the coastal areas of the state, adding that the wave height can be up to 1 m in the threat of a tsunami was advised to exercise extreme caution inhabitants the second largest city of the state — Cebu. Warning was later lifted.

The Philippines lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and is especially prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In 1990, an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 on the northern Philippines killed more than 1.6 thousand people.
