Expected eruption Reventador

Volcanoes

29.07.11.Vulkan Reventador, located on the border of the provinces of Napo and Sucumbios, 100 kilometers east of the capital of Ecuador, registers the new period of increasing activity, in connection with which the staff of the Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School (EPN) moved to the continuous monitoring of the colossus.

Monitoring data, confirmed by observation from a helicopter, confirm that the observed accumulation of lava inside the crater, filled to the level of the highest point of the volcano.

Increasing the pressure inside the crater of the volcano led to the release of the active columns of steam, according to observations volcanologists EPN, but while the activity of the volcano has not led to a flow of lava streams.

Authorities recommend that people refrain from any attempt to climb up the slopes of the volcano Reventador.

Mercedes Taipa, a seismologist of the Geophysical Institute, said that the volcano is in a phase of moderate activity, so that its activity is not causing alarm among experts. The current increase in the activity began with the first of July. Love builds up inside the crater, forming a dome, explained the expert. The temperature in this part reaches about 150 degrees. If the crater will be crowded, growing in the crater of the internal pressure could cause an explosion, the force of which will depend on the amount of accumulated volcanic material. If this happens, according to Taipa, most worryingly, he expects — damaged roads and pipeline, which takes place in the area, as it was nine years ago.

During the largest eruption in November 2002, a cloud of ash ejected this volcano reached the capital of Ecuador. Since then, the colossus recorded several periods of activity that produced lava stream coming down from the crowded crater on the northern and southern side of the mountain. Last lava flowed down the slopes Reventador in October 2009.

Hugo Yepes, the head of the Geophysical Institute, excludes the possibility that Quito will again be under a layer of ash, as it was in 2002. He believes that the maximum time — a "soft" eruption, with characteristics different from the eruption of 2002. In an interview volcanologist assured reporters that there is no reason for concern.
