Last Thursday at the Military Academy Army Air Defence (Smolensk) held a conference on the development of air defense of ground troops. Representatives of the Ministry of Defence and industry discussed the state and prospects of Russian anti-aircraft systems, and saw some examples of the new technology. On a small exhibition at the conference demonstrated the different types of equipment and their layouts. Of greatest interest is one of the featured anti-aircraft missiles, called "Pine". The fact that earlier this SAM is not shown at public events and last exhibition can be considered his first show.

The new short-range air defense system "Pine" was created by Precision Engineering Design Bureau named. AE Nudelman in cooperation with the Saratov aggregate plant. Like its predecessors, such as the "Strela-10", etc., complex "Pine" is designed to provide air defense compounds on the march and on the positions. When creating a new organization of SAM-developers tried to give him a number of characteristics that provide more in comparison with existing systems and increase the combat potential of the vitality of the machine on the battlefield.
As noted in the description on the official website of the Design Bureau, the modern anti-aircraft short-range missiles have several serious drawbacks. This is the high cost of combat vehicles due to the large number of advanced equipment, and the use of active systems of target detection. The latter factor makes the SAM antiradar vulnerable to enemy weapons. To solve this problem, even in the nineties Academician AG Shipunov proposed to abandon the use of sophisticated radar systems to detect and use them instead of the hardware that acts on a different principle and not betraying yourself radiated signal.

In addition to the presence of passive detection and high survivability SAMs were presented to the perspective and other requirements. So, missiles "Pine" had to engage targets at ranges of up to 10 kilometers, with a list of potential targets of anti-aircraft complex include not only aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, but also unmanned aerial vehicles, precision weapons, and other small objects. Two other important requirements affected the combat vehicle and launcher. Required to provide an automatic search, detection and tracking, as well as to increase the ammunition on the launcher and 12 rockets.

In the official materials of the complex "Pine" as a basis for the combat vehicle featured a light armored MT-LB chassis. However, all elements of the air defense system can be installed on any suitable chassis, wheeled or tracked. For a new set of anti-aircraft guided missile developed two-stage "Pine-R" with a combined system of governance. On the tower fighting machine SAM is placed gyro stabilized platform with a set of necessary equipment. All other elements of the anti-aircraft complex electronics are located inside the hulls. This is a digital computer control, automatic target acquisition and tracking, missile control system, etc.

In accordance with the terms of reference, a new air defense system "pine" should be automatic search and attack targets. As stated, the complex can operate in two modes. In all automatic processes occur without human intervention, which can significantly reduce the response time. In semi-automatic mode, the operator controls the operation of systems, but most of the processes are carried out automatically. Semi-automatic mode is recommended for combat operations in difficult noise conditions.

Missiles and anti-aircraft system itself are protected from interference by several methods, embedded at the level of the structure. Thus, the location of the receiver of the laser radiation in the back of the rocket can not distort or suppress the control signal. Noise immunity of the ground part of the complex is provided by a narrow field of view of television and thermal imaging channels (no more than 6.7 degrees x9), as well as the use of special computer algorithms that identify the purpose for its characteristic features.

Anti-aircraft missile complex "Pine" is supposed to produce a ready crew compartment, which can be installed on any suitable chassis. Thus, in contrast to previous systems for the same purpose, the operator of "Pine" is located inside the armored corps and does not rotate along with the tower. At the request of the customer’s anti-aircraft tower complex can be equipped with additional small-sized radar to detect targets.

In the basic version, without radar, air defense system "Pine" is said to have a high survivability on the battlefield. During the search target complex emits nothing that makes it difficult to detect. During the first two seconds after the missile launch control system works aerial rockets, then switched off and the control is carried out only by a laser beam. If necessary, the basic machine can be equipped with additional set of tools to reduce the visual and thermal signature.

In general, the air defense system "Pine" has a high enough perspective, but its future is not clear yet. According to head of the Army Air Defense Forces, Major-General Alexei Leonov, the complex "Pine" has not yet passed the state tests and have yet to discuss its possibilities and prospects.
