The problem is that the two huge "thermochemical piles" of molten rock, about 4830 km in diameter are moving towards each other at the bottom of the mantle. Their existence has been known for decades, but initially it was thought that they are static. But after extensive research of seismic waves, Thorne made sure that they are actually moving at the same time. As a result, a huge molten bubbles once under the ocean will create enormous pressure, which, ultimately, will lead to an explosion on the surface.
"The fact that we may be found to be the beginning of one of these large eruptive events, which — if it occurs — can lead to a very massive destruction on Earth" — said Thorne.
Fortunately, the process is slow — it takes about 100 million years or so.
And anyway, there are other supervolcanoes that are worth worrying to begin with.
