Calendar method

Calendar method.

Many women prefer to use the so-called natural family planning methods, which are based on observations of the physiological signs and symptoms of the fertile (when a woman is fertile), and infertility (when the woman is not able to conceive) phases of the menstrual cycle.

The purpose of this method — the definition of "dangerous" period, when the ability to fertilize the highest. The idea of a calendar (or rhythm) method is simple: avoid sexual intercourse during the period when there is a chance of getting pregnant. The rest of the time you can not think about contraceptive methods and not use any of them.

For the successful application of these methods requires self-discipline and careful record keeping, moreover, is not the way of contraception, and a method to determine the fertile period, abstaining from intercourse during this time will help prevent pregnancy.

Methods of natural family planning can be applied:

  • women who can not use other methods;
  • women with regular menstrual cycle;
  • couples do not use other methods for religious or philosophical beliefs;
  • couples who are prepared to avoid sexual intercourse more than a week during each cycle;
  • couples who are in an environment where modern contraceptive methods are not available.

This method is not ideal — for every 100 women, protect the natural way, we have to 10-15 unintended pregnancies each year. In addition, the calendar method of birth control can not be applied in irregular menstrual cycle. And abstaining from sex, of course, can make life difficult for women.

The timing of the onset and duration of the period of possible conception is carried out based on the duration of the menstrual cycle in the past 8-12 months (at least!). Home dangerous period is calculated by subtracting the number 18 on the duration of the shortest cycle (eg, for 12 months shortest cycle duration was 26 days, so the beginning of the fertile period falls on8th day of the cycle).

End of dangerous period is calculated by subtracting the number 11 on the duration of the longest cycle (eg, for 12 months the longest cycle length was 30 days, so the end of the fertile period begins on19 minutes day of the cycle). Thus, the period of possible conception begins at8th day cycle and ends at19 minutes (In this example, the menstrual cycle is not entirely regular, and therefore the duration of the fertile period is 11 days). In such a period of sex without the risk of conception is possible to8th day of the cycle (it has to start at1st day period) and after 19th.

You should avoid sexual acts in a "dangerous period" or use additional contraceptive methods (condoms, spermicides) as a last resort to resort to emergency postcoital contraception.

One can use the following table:

How to calculate the "dangerous" days, the most likely to conceive

If your cycle is very short (days)

Your first fertile (dangerous) day

If your cycle is very long (days)

Your last fertile (dangerous) day

Example of use of the table: Menstrual cycle from 27 to 33 days. In the table to find the shortest cycle — 27 days to determine the first "dangerous" day (in this case — 9 days after the onset of menses). Next you need to find the longest cycle — 33 days and determine the latest "dangerous" day (in this case 22 days after the start of menstruation). Thus, the "dangerous period" will be from 9 to 22 days of the menstrual cycle (counting from the 1st day of the last menstrual period).

The lower the reliability of the method, the greater the difference between the longest and shortest menstrual cycle in the past 8-12 months. For women with irregular cycles, this method is not acceptable at all.
