Previous like opening domestic astronomers — on account of Soviet scientists. In 1990, a new comet discovered, along with Japanese colleagues, an astronomer from Lithuania Casimir Chernis. The comet has been named C/1990 E1 (Chernis-Kiuchi-Nakamura).

Opened in December of C/2010 X1 (Elenin) was found with the help of the observatory ISON-NM, which is located in the U.S. state of New Mexico, but it is remotely controlled by Russian scientists. The site Observatory on December 11 came the news about the discovery of a new object, which appears to be a long-period comet. Quite quickly opening was confirmed by Russian and Ukrainian astronomers working at the observatory Maidanak in Uzbekistan. A little later, it was confirmed from the American and Japanese counterparts.

The parameters of the orbit of the comet while it is not defined, but the available data it can be concluded that the perihelion (closest point to the Sun orbit) of its orbit is at a distance of about four astronomical units (that is, four times farther from the Sun than the Earth).

To date, discovered more than 400 comets, most of which — the short-period (have a period of revolution around the Sun is less than 200 years).

Only five comets have been studied up close by spacecraft — is Halley’s comet Wild 2, Borrelli, Tempel 1 and Hartley 2.
