If you live on the other side of the lake, in which the wind is blowing, you surely know the phenomenon of the "snow lake effect." This happens when the cold wind moves over relatively warm body of water. As a result, there are strong snow storm on a small scale. This means that in one city may experience heavy snowfall and a few miles sky is sunny and the weather is warm.

American Buffalo, which is located next to Lake Erie, known for frequent lake effect snow caused by cold wind flow from Canada. When the wind moves over the Great Lakes, the humidity and the heat rises to the air mass, gradually turning into snowflakes, which in turn falls in the direction of the wind. Similar phenomena have been observed on the shores of Great Britain, Japan, France, Korea, and are called ocean effect snow, formed by the movement of cold air over warm ocean waters.

In December 2010, in the western part of New York near Buffalo observed effect snow lake, in which over 16 kilometers of snow reached one meter in height.

Lake snow phenomenon can occur with early fall and throughout the winter. Autumn snow effect is more often observed in the form of heavy rains, which are closer to the middle of November — beginning of December turned into snow. If the lake freezes over, naturally, snowfall stops.
