Biodiversity of 65% of the world's rivers threatened

Under the threat of extinction is not only a lot of terrestrial species of living organisms, but also water, including river.

Construction of dams and hydropower plants, industrial discharges, runoff from agricultural land, invasion of alien organisms — all this has led to the fact that 65% of the species diversity of the world's rivers is under threat. Such a sad conclusion researchers at New York University as a result of an attempted to quantify the impact of 23 negative factors affecting the species diversity of aquatic river (See map below).

Reduced biodiversity of river ecosystems is reflected in the health of people living on the banks of rivers.
