Indian AWACS aircraft experienced joint development BAe / HAL - HS.748 AEW (1980 and 1990)

This plane distant early warning and control has several names, in which encrypted name manufacturers: HS.748 AEW — British BAe or Indian HAL. In addition, the aircraft took part in the development of the Israeli company «Elbit», which put its radar type Phalcon AEW.
Work on a new AWACS aircraft for its own Sun begins in 1985, one of the branches of the Indian HAL. Base for new aircraft purchased Hawker Siddeley HS 748, built by the British license by HAL (20 aircraft), it was twin-engined passenger aircraft. It was intended for testing the installation and operation of the outer fairing with the radar antenna (test aircraft), for the upcoming installation on Russian IL-76, also built under license by the Indian company (meaning to some of the 72 IL-72).

Radar antenna installed virtually over the middle of a rotating body fairing. Fairing was 7.2 meters in diameter and 1.5 meters in height. Rotation of the antenna extends above the keel ending AWACS aircraft, which reduces the reflection signal from the airframe. Antenna radome made using the German company «DASA», which also helped in designing a rotating radar antenna. In avionics included a hybrid navigation system and cryptographic data transmission system.
Major work on the creation of the Indian AWACS aircraft finished by 1990. Experienced with standard fairing, in which there was no radar antenna until the first time, first took to the skies in November 1990. Tests under the modernized aircraft AWACS capability for various reasons sometimes lasted almost a decade, and was built at least three experienced reference AWACS aircraft, while in January 1999 was a tragedy not — completing flight AWACS aircraft began to enter the runway airbase Indian Navy Arakon and crashed. All people are on board — crew (4 people) and technology (4 people) were killed. The main reason for the crash — fire on board or refusal engines with the upcoming fire.

This tragedy was the end of the project AWACS aircraft based on HS 748. Previously it was assumed that the fairing with the radar antenna will eventually mounted on Russian Il-76MD. But it happened crash led to a complete cancellation of programs from the creation of its own AWACS aircraft for the Indian Sun In 2003, the United States insisted on the return of Israel’s own Phalcon AEW radar of Indian treaty.
