A swanky new apartment condominium in the Orchard Road belt has a special lift that sends the owner’s parked car up to his residence, where these vehicles literally become part of the home decor. But there’s another way to enjoy your favourite «cars» in the comfort of your home — get them as furniture. A slew of carmakers has been launching chairs that carry the aesthetic trademarks and groundbreaking technology of their prized vehicles.

The Maserati by Zanotta lounge chair captures the harmonious lines of the new Maserati Quattroporte. Designers Ludovica and Roberto Palomba have created a leather seat that exemplifies the luxury, craftsmanship and technology of the sports sedan. Also rooted in luxury is the DS sofa by French carmarker Citroen. Featuring a sleek liquid-metal look similar to that of the car it’s based on, its seats boast the same leather «watchstrap» upholstery fitted in all current Citroen DS models.

More futuristic-looking are the high-tech Audi R18 Ultra chair and Madza Kodo chair. The former’s hard-edged look is executed in carbon fibre, carbon and high-strength sheet aluminium, resulting in a light, yet perfectly balanced form. On the other hand, the Kodo is designed to look «ready to pounce» and conceived along the themes of movement and «soul in motion’.

The cute-as-a-button Smart car went several steps further. With Danish furniture company Boconcept, it developed Smartville, a whole range of furnishings including a sofa, armchair, coffee-table and accessories such as mugs and clocks. Love your car? Now motorheads can park this passion in their homes, too!
