WHAT IS A FICEM BOARD?
A ficem board—short for fiber cement board—is composed of cement and plant fibers. Although ficem boards are not ideal for load-bearing or structural walls, they can be used for various interior surface treatments, like siding, partitions, dropped ceiling, coves, and other decorative details.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING A FICEM BOARD?
“Ficem boards are all-weather proof, unlike plywood and gypsum board,” explains architect Anthony Yan, adding that unlike wood, ficem boards are also resistant to termite. Meanwhile, architect Love de Leon adds, “It is actually easier to use because unlike plywood that you have to cut with a saw, ficem boards use scoring knife for cutting. Another plus point for using ficem board is that you can use a water-based paint, which has minimal odor, unlike the enamel paint used for plywood.”
WHERE CAN I USE FICEM BOARDS? Anthony says ficem boards are often used as interior partitions because they are durable, easy to install, and sound-proof. Love says they can also be used for dropped ceilings, with 3.5mm, 4.5mm, and 6mm being the recommended thickness, then fastened using Hardieflex nails. Ficem boards are ideal for exteriors as well, because ficem board is water-resistant,” says Anthony.
WHERE ARE FICEM BOARDS AVAILABLE? One popular brand of ficem board is Hardieflex, which is available in major hardware stores and home depots. Hardieflex Walls can be used as partitions. For kitchens, laundry areas, and bathrooms, Hardieflex Wet Area Walls are recommended for their maximum moisture-resistance. If you love a wooden exterior but do not want to use wooden planks as siding, then HardiePlank Siding is ideal, as it looks like real wood.
