THE THEATRE GETTING BETTER

Rattlestick kicks off its new season with «The Hill Town Plays», a five-play cycle by Lucy Thurber, which follows a woman’s life from her abusive, impoverished childhood in a small Massachusetts town to a successful writing career.

NIGHT LIFE THE VOICE

Earlier this year, Bobby McFerrin released the album «Spirityouall», a rootsy collection of spirituals, originals, and a Bob Dylan cover. Bobby’s show at Summer Stage is a family affair; it includes his daughter Madison, a singer.

ART DOMESTIC POLICY

MOMA owns masterpieces by Matisse and Picasso, but the first painting to enter its collection, in 1930, was by an American Edward Hopper’s «House by the Railroad» (1925). That work joins more than a hundred and fifty others, from portraits of artists by Alfred Stieglitz to Andrew Wyeth’s «Christina’s World», in the exhibition «American Modern:Hopper to O’Keeffe».

CLASSICAL MUSIC SKIN GAME

Pierre-Laurent Aimard’s choice of repertoire at Tanglewood’s Festival of Contemporary Music is, as expected, heavily European and fiercely modernist. Especially noteworthy is the highly anticipated U.S. premiere of George Benjamin’s acclaimed opera «Written on Skin».

MOVIES DREAMSCAPES

The American civil-rights struggle was also a crucial cinematic movement, as seen in BAM Cinematek’s series «A Time for Burning», which includes the documentary «Crisis», showing President Kennedy’s use of federal power to integrate the University of Alabama, and the drama «Nothing But a Man».
