Under New Command fOR MORE THAN FORTY years Strategic Air Command was the sole operator of the US Air Forces fleet of bombers and the majority of its tankers. However on June 1, 1992 SAC, along with Military Airlift Command (MAC) and Tactical Air Command (TAC) were replaced by two new organisations. Air Combat Command (ACC) and Air Mobility Command (AMC) were formed that day to help streamline USAF operations as the twenty first century approaches. ACC is based broadly along the lines of TAC even to me extent of having its headquarters located in the former Tactical Air Command building at Langley AFB, Virginia. AMC operates from Scott AFB, Illinois from the building previously housing the headquarters of MAC.

All aircraft formerly assigned to MAC, SAC and TAC and which are home based in the continental United States have been transferred to one of the two new Commands, resulting in new markings and colour schemes being applied. Whereas ACC has assumed virtually all of TAC’s assets and AMC has been given the majority of MAC’s aircraft types, the 1,000 plus bombers and tankers of SAC have been divided between the two organisations.

As its title suggests Air Combat Command has the primary role of strike and air defence with an area of responsibility encompassing not just the United States

Declining budgets challenge France as it seeks fiscal control, defense autonomy

The top priority of France’s newly elected president, Francois Hollande, is to slash government debt. Although this is no surprise, such a primary goal requires sacrifices as well as new priorities in an environment such as the current very challenging one: The economy is weak, growth is minimal, and the aerospace and defense industry’s production costs are too high to efficiently sustain competition.

Initial steps to kick off a difficult recovery effort are being devised and defense budgets are not expected to be significantly reduced. France benefits from a

ULTRA WIDE-ANGLES

THE VFRSATILITY OF AN ULTRA WIDE-ANGLE ZOOM MAKES IT A MUST-HAVE OPTIC FOR EVERY DSLR USER. WE TEST FOUR POPULAR ZOOMS THAT CAN BE USED WITH FULL-FRAME AND APPS-C SENSORS

WITH A WIDE-ANGLE LENS, your first thought is probably landscapes — and they’re certainly great for capturing broad, sweeping views. Another good time to grab a wide-angle is in tight spaces, particularly interiors when there just isn’t room to move back.

Wide-angles can also play to your creative side, making everyday subjects look excitingly dynamic with exaggerated perspective effects. This is not a characteristic of the lens itself, as perspective

Air Force Commander Volodymyr Antonets said Ukraine was no longer capable of supporting the Tu-160, and would rely in future on its remaining 24 Tu-95 Bears. It has not been announced how many of the 18 Tu-160s based at Priluki, 75 miles (120km) north of Kiev, are to be

UK Wants Litening Pod for typhoons

THE UK is looking to equip its Eurofighter Typhoon with the Rafael Litening III target designation pod, according to RAF sources. Moves to buy the Israeli-made pod are the result of the RAF’s emerging requirement to field multi-role capabilities on Typhoon as soon as possible.

«It’s not a done deal yet,» commented a senior RAF officer involved in the Typhoon project. «We want them to equip the final aircraft of our Tranche 1 Typhoon buy in the 2007 time scale. Then we will retro-fit the earlier aircraft so we don’t have a fleet within a fleet.”

The final decision on

Uganda returns Hinds.

UGANDA ANNOUNCED on March 15 that it is returning two Mi-24 attack helicopters -reportedly because they have not been overhauled as specified in the contract. The supplier, Consolidated Sales Corporation (CSC) has been given three weeks to meet its obligations or face the loss of the contract and a demand for a refund. However, CSC maintains that the deal has no termination clause but does allow for amicable settlement or arbitration.

The latest difficulty is finding a suitable overhaul location. The Ugandans estimate the overhaul cost to be $1.2 million, but CSC objects to that amount. It has come up

UK considers US-style FMS regime

It was the possibility of a UK FMS like regime, however, that gained particular traction in some quarters of industry. Other European countries are reported

• The introduction of a US-style Foreign Military Sales system has been discussed in UK government and industry

• The idea is not being “actively progressed” though, with costs likely to be a barrier to have looked at similar options.

While UK industry sources have expressed enthusiasm for such a regime, rhe potential initial costs to government at a time of austerity suggest that the scheme will remain on hold for some time.
