An extensively modified Bombardier Global Express business jet, it was crewed by Peter Collins, Head of Flying at Raytheon Broughton and Raytheon UK ASTOR Project Test Pilot, and Sqn Ldr Tim Butler, the RAF ASTOR Project Test Pilot. During the four-hour flight the aircraft climbed to an altitude of 17,000ft (5,200m) and reached an indicated airspeed of 320kts (593km/ h). Following further

SENSE &ZENSIBILITY

Chines Workshop blends a minimalist Zen look with gorgeously tactile surfaces for a home that’s at once clean, warm and inviting.

Designing a Zen-inspired home is a bit like training for a ballet performance: all the blood, sweat and tears go into making the whole thing seem entirely effortless. As any dancer or designer will tell you, however, the easier it looks, the more work would have been required to achieve that effect. Chine’s Workshop takes us backstage to find out exactly what it takes to design a beautifully minimalist home.

“The clients wanted their home to be very simple,”

Make and send elegant collages on your Mac

Sending a selection of photos to your friends and family via email can be a laborious task for both you and the recipient. Images have to be attached to the message, perhaps in more then one email if the files are too large, and then your loved one has to open each individual photo when the emails arrive in their inbox.

Thankfully, iPhoto provides a simple solution to sharing multiple images. Apple’s photo management software iPhoto lets you create an elegant collage of your shots that can be customised to suit a

Self Defence

Lon Nordeen and John Quigley conclude their report on the evolution of aircraft self-protection systems over the past three decades.

IN THE second, concluding part of this self-defence system article, the authors review Electronic Attack, Electronic Warfare Support, Suppression and/or Destruction of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD/DEAD) and the application of GPS-guided weapons in those roles.

Electronic Attack

This activity involves jamming or deceiving an adversary’s radar or radio communications. Jamming aircraft such as the US Air Force EB-66, US Navy EA-1F, EKA-3B plus US Marine Corps EF-10 and EA-6A added an electronic ‘punch’ with which to suppress North Vietnamese surveillance

SEE-SAW

An ever popular toy with all ages, children just love being rocketed up into the air on a see-saw and equally relish the thump as they come back to earth. This design allows for rapid assembly and dismantling- the board can stand upright in your shed or garage and the stand can hang on the wall. Children of different weights can easily find the correct balance position as I have allowed a long seating area and good handles.

I used Nordic redwood timber and ramin dowel rods. It is probably best to buy the dowel rod necessary before getting to

SEEK OUT SYMMETRY

Although using symmetry appears to break the rules of composition (because it usually involves placing the main subject in the middle of the shot, or dividing the frame down the centre), on the right scene or subject this can produce fantastic images.

Reflections in water are a common form of symmetry — and who can resist them, especially when the reflection is of a beautiful scene? You’ll also find lots of symmetry in architecture and engineering — think of suspension bridges, interiors, office buildings, the underside of old piers, the structure of an electricity pylon when viewed from beneath.

Seeing is believing

Whereas the First World War at sea is best remembered for the actions of the larger warships, a large proportion of the everyday duties of the Royal Navy was performed by smaller motor launches. An example of this is the actions of ML 357 which attacked three German submarines in the final months of 1917. These attacks formed the contents of a letter, revealed by Rick Mayall, which was written by the commander of the motor launch in January 1918.

On 9 April 1915, the British Admiralty placed an order througn Canadian Vickers for fifty anti-submarine boats to be built
