THE MODEL OF 1917 MACHINE GUN CARTS

As the United States went to war in 1917, it was immediately understood that methods of moving men and materiel was of paramount concern. Never before in the history of the United States had it mobilised the number of men and equipment to a foreign shore as it did in 1917-18. New (and finicky) automobiles and trucks were used to convey everything from men, field equipment, supplies, kitchens and the wounded once in theatre. But a heavy reliance on the tried and true method of animal-drawn carts that were smaller, lighter, more robust and dependable also proved prudent. All types

THE MIKOYAN-Gurevich MiG-31 Foxhound is one of the most powerful interceptors flying today. It owes its outstanding capability to a combination of performance, weaponry, and avionics. Even though it first flew more than 30 years ago, it is still Russias most effective air defence interceptor. The aircraft forms the backbone of its air defence force and will continue to do so well into the 21st century.

Development

In the late 1960s, the Soviet Government began the search for a new long-range, extended endurance interceptor to replace its Tupolev Tu-28s and MiG-25 Foxbats. It was intended to counter the threat of low-flying cruise missiles launched from NATO/US B-52s and B-ls, which the MiG-25 was unable to do. MiG-25s functioned well as high-altitude interceptors with the help of ground control data links, as their original mission was to intercept the USAF’s high-altitude Mach 3 B-70 Valkyrie bomber. However, the B-70 never went into production on account of defence cutbacks. The Foxbat’s avionics and performance were largely ineffective against

The mighty nimrod

IN THE LATTER HALF of 1942, German U-boats were sinking an average of 750,000 tons of Allied shipping a month — the Battle of the Atlantic was being lost. Not only were the vital cargoes not getting through but ships and merchant seamen were being lost faster than they could be replaced. Within a year the situation had changed and the U-boat ‘happy time’ was over as their losses rose dramatically.

This turnabout was in large part due to the increase in the anti-submarine capability of Coastal Command, air cover of the convoys in previously unguarded areas meant decreased losses

The Messenes Model

In the heart of Staffordshire’s Cannock Chase lies a tangible reminder of the area’s use as a ^ training ground in the First World War. For there, hidden for generations, lies a scale model of the Belgian town of Messines, the scene of the great British offensive in June 1917. Lee Dent and Richard Pursehouse reveal the story behind the model and the recent investigative excavations.

Take a look at any map of Great Britain, locate the county of Staffordshire and you will find Cannock Chase clearly marked. Surrounding this area you will find the towns and villages of Stafford,

The lawyers figured that such misconduct had already been recorded. In Tenaha, the police that on the night of her detention Washington told her that the whole thing was being captured on film. Garrigan had requested footage of traffic stops made by Washington and his partner, along with related video from the station, but got nowhere. Then, after the Tenaha lawsuit caught the attention of the national media, the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice launched its own criminal investigation into the alleged abuses. Several months later, in October, 2009, large stacks of optical disks were finally turned over. Garrigan and Guillory now had hundreds of hours of digital footage to sort through. Garrigan hired a colleagues adult son to sit at a large oval wood veneer table with a laptop and a supply of Starbucks, sorting through it all. (Hes still at it.)

Curiously, most of Barry Washington’s traffic stops were absent from the record. In those instances where Washington had turned on his dashboard camera, the video was often of such poor quality as to be «useless», Garrigan says. There was hardly any footage of his clients, including Jennifer Boatright and Ron Henderson.

In James Morrow’s case, a sliver of video was identified from Constable Randy Whatleyʼs camera feed, which captured part of the man’s detention by the side of the road. Washington could be heard instructing Whatley, «Would

The medical device company must back up its recommendations with scientific research.

I certainly understand why a hospital would be skeptical of Bosi e Faora’s solutions-selling strategy, given that the company doesn’t seem to be backing up its recommendations with scientific proof.

Before planning to disseminate inexpensive blood-pressure monitors for home use, a medical device manufacturer should study whether patients are likely to participate in such a program, how much training of medical and support staff would be required, and whether the new practice would improve health outcomes. Before marketing the device, the company should run pilot studies, either on its own or in partnership with academic researchers, that set up the

THE LINGERY SPECIAL!

Rosie Jones

H ello Rosie! Tell us why lingerie is so brilliant bloody…

Hello! Although I love being naked and spend most of my time that way, I think girls look a lot sexier in underwear. It accentuates all the good bits and makes you wonder what ’ s underneath.

Good call! What ’ s the last really sexy item you invested in?

I ’ ve bought loads of sexy stuff for my calendar shoot. I got some very small bras and lots of stockings and suspenders.

Which celebs look amazing in a nice bit of lingerie?

Sofia Vergara always

OS X Mavericks is generating a lot of buzz with its stick-looking app upgrades, but Rik Myslewski is more excited about the features we can’t see

Apple’s OS X Mavericks adds a number of nifty features — I’m particularly jazzed about improvements to the Finder, Safari, and the Calendar app — but even more interesting to us in the geek community are a trio of under-the-hood items that boost both performance and battery life.

The first goes by the oh-so-cute name of App Nap — definitely a «What took you so long?» feature. App Nap keeps an eye on the

The Last TOMCAT Crusade

The USS George Washington (CVN 73) is currently making history as it sails in the 5th Fleet Area of Operations with two squadrons of F-14 Tomcats on board as part of the embarked Carrier Air Wing 7 (CVW-7). This is the last deployment of an Air Wing with two squadrons of the mighty F-14 assigned before all Tomcat squadrons are disbanded or converted to the different variants of the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

The carrier started the work-up period for this, its sixth deployment to the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf following a six-month Planned Incremental Availability (PIA) at the US Naval
