THE GREENY 1959 GIBSON LES PAUL STANDARD

Phil Harris loves Les Paul Standards, but he’s falling in love all over again now that he has his hands on one of the greatest artist-owned examples of all – Peter Green’s ’59 sunburst.

Regular readers of Hooked On Classics will know that I’m a Gibson Les Paul Standard fanatic, and I’m very lucky to now have in my possession what I believe is the greatest Les Paul Standard ever – the 1959 sunburst played by Peter Green, then by Gary Moore, but the guitar forever known as ‘Greeny’.

Meeting Greeny

Me and this guitar go back a long way.

THAT TIMBER TOUCH

Intergrain Timber Finishes featured on Best in Show and gold medal-winning Fleming’s Trailfinders Australian Garden at the 2013 Chelsea Flower Show.

The Royal Horticultural Society’s world-famous Chelsea Flower Show in London is the Olympics of the horticultural world. The event showcases the best of Australian horticultural design and construction, and inspires others to think about best practices within the landscape contractor industry. Intergrain has featured on the Trailfinders Australian Garden, presented by Fleming’s Nurseries, since 2008.

In 2013, the ninth and final Australian Garden to ever be presented by Fleming’s made history around the world. The Australian Garden was awarded

Thai Navy Harriers join up

Salvador Mate Huertas reports on the transfer of Spanish AV-8Ss and TAV-8Ss to the Royal Thai Navy.

AT THE END of October 1996, seven single-seat AV-8Ss and two dual TAV-8S which had served with 8a Escuadrilla of the Spanish Navy’s Fleet Air Arm for over 20 years, joined the Royal Thai Navy. They became part of 301 Squadron, the strike fighter element of a new air group being established for the new Principe de Asturias class carrier, the RTNS Chakri Naruebet.

The 8a Escuadrilla was commissioned on September 29, 1976, and during the early years it gained valuable carrier utilisation

TEXTING AS SOCIAL REGRESS

On its face, you may think there’s nothing wrong with using a smartphone or digital media player to connect with some one who is nearby. But not being face-to-face has its consequences—some fairly obvious, some not so much.

The accident risk when taking your eyes off the road to type in text or read the screen exceeds the risk when driving while drunk. «There are simple limits to our multitasking abilities,» says Stacey Hanke, a Chicago-based management consultant. «We can’t safely drive a car while typing on a keyboard or reading a screen. The human mind simply isn’t capable of

When I was invited to sample the new Inca #280.10 table saw, I thought I’d be in for a real treat, a version of their #2100 (reviewed in Popular Woodworking Issue #34) that I could actually afford. Since the tool was not yet for sale in this country, there was no price on it. My friendly Inca dealer had both saws in his shop. Next to the 12″ saw, this new one is almost diminutive.

The machines differ other than just in size. The mortising table for the big saw is a rock-stable 92 pound behemoth that cost around $1,200

Testing for War

WHAT’S NEW IN the world of RAF attack aircraft? Squadrons may claim that their aircraft are to the latest operational standards, but by the time that a new piece of kit is fitted to a Tornado or Harrier it will be well familiar at Boscombe Down. Famous as the base of the MoD PE’s Aircraft & Armament Evaluation Establishment’, this Wiltshire aerodrome is also host to an RAF unit dedicated more to operational development than test flying and aircraft handling. The Central Tactics & Trials Organisation (CTTO) reports to HQ Strike Command at High Wycombe and directly controls its own

Test Pilot

Aviation Week Video/Aviation Week & Space Technology, Volume 3; number 2. Approximate running time 70 minutes, £12.99.

This is one of a series of videos produced by Aviation Week and is of a high technical standard with good, informative commentary and unobtrusive music. Unusually for an American production, it is not entirely about US aircraft and pilots. The worst feature for me was the inclusion of three advertisement slots, albeit brief and entirely related to aviation.

After the introductory footage of an F-14 Tomcat mission, with the appropriate music, the commentary leads easily into the historical view of test pilots.

Tenaha, population 1,170, is a sleepy stretch of East Texas that smells of its three main industries: cattle, timber, and poultry. The only sit-down restaurant for miles, the Whistle Stop, has a Texas Narcotics Officers Association sticker on the front door, along with a sign that reads We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to Anyone. Inside, when a newcomer sits down to order lunch on a workday afternoon, locals crane their necks to get a better look. Next door is the towns main tourist attraction, the Tenaha Antique Mall, where a cashier spends her days staring at a rusty Barry Goldwater for President sign and stacks of vintage Coca-Cola bottles; she sells her own tea cakes on the side, in small ziplock bags.

The town’s racial geography feels like a throwback, too. White residents live in homes that range from sturdy brick facades to ramshackle trailers; black residents tend to live in «the Quarters», where the roads are a lumpy mess of silt and rocks, and some houses have limited access to the sewage system. For years, young people of both races have been emptying out of Tenaha.

«There’s not much for our children to do but leave», Marie Crawford, a genteel former city councilwoman, told me recently, as we drove around town in her burgundy van. She has a silver-straight bob and
