RNZAF Light Helicopter Tender

LONG-STANDING plans to replace the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) Bell 47G Sioux fleet moved ahead on October 13 with issue of a Request for Tender (RFT) for a new Training/Light Utility Helicopter (T/LUH) for the RNZAF. It was decided some time ago that the replacement helicopter would not train only rotary-wing pilots, but also be used in the light utility role. An invitation to register interest was issued in July 2005 (see RNZAF Training/Light Utility Helicopter Project Advancing, September 2005, p27).

The new RFT stipulates that the helicopter offered must be currently in production, have twin engines with

RNLAF Apaches Move Base in Afghanistan

ROYAL NETHERLANDS Air Force (RNLAF) AH-64D Longbow Apache helicopters deployed to Afghanistan have moved their base from Kandahar to Tarin Kowt in Uruzgan. The six Apaches from 301 Squadron made the 30-minute flight to their new home on October 20, whilst still maintaining readiness to provide support for any operations, if required, during the move. Stationing the helicopters at Tarin Kowt will move them much closer to the Dutch ground troops deployed there, enabling them to provide protection when needed in a shorter space of time. A new apron has been constructed at their new base which can accommodate all

Rising star

As soon as it was launched, the Nissan Cabstar established itself as a more than willing general workhorse. The model was always very special for John Waring when he was a youngster, so it was something of a labour of love when he fully restored his 1984 model. Bob Tuck joins the pair for a breeze round in the North Yorkshire sun.

It’s sometimes worth hanging on to your earliest dreams and aspirations. Yes, we all grow up and things we hoped for when we were youngsters might seem of little consequence when we reach adulthood. But there are times

Rissala AB, Finland — May 24

RISSALA AB, the home of the Finnish Air Force MiGs, held its annual open day in May and for the first time the event was extended to include an evening airshow. The static display featured all the types operated by KarLsto (Karelian Wing) HavLLv 31 (Fighter Squadron 31). The Valmet Vinka, BAe Hawk Mk 51 and MiG-21b/s gave flying displays, and during the afternoon — between the open day and the airshow — all those displaying practised their routines.

The F-15 made its debut in Finland — two F-15Cs, 84-0005 and 80-0004, both coded ‘SP’ from the USAFE’s 52nd FW

Ring breakdown

What are Jupiter’s rings made of, how big are they and how were they formed?

Halo ring

The innermost halo ring stretches from around 92,000km (57,000 miles) to just over 120,000km (78,000) and is the thickest of Jupiter’s rings through the vertical. It’s shaped like a torus and is significantly less bright than the main ring despite being many times wider and thicker. The dust particles that the Halo ring is composed of are less than 15 micrometres in diameter and are mostly derived from the main ring.

Main ring

This narrow ring is just 6,500km (4,000 miles) wide and

RIDE ON

Hop is smashing up the hours and having a ball on the project Suzuki RMX450Z

Talk about extremes — it’s gone from bull-dusty dry conditions to extremely wet in my part of the world. We’ve had some of the biggest floods since 1968. You couldn’t get out for a ride without getting soaked straight off the bat so I just didn’t.

Call me soft but I wasn’t that keen to punish myself or the RMX. It would’ve been just my luck to have ended up upside-down in some flooded creek which wouldn’t have helped keep me on the DA project

Ricoh GR. More than Meets the Eye.

Since the acquisition of Pentax by Ricoh in 2011, the GR is the very first Ricoh camera to be released. Thrilling aficionados of the venerable series, the new GR (the fifth) now sports a 16.2MP APS-C sensor nine times larger than previous GR editions. In India, the similarly priced Nikon A is vying for exactly the same markets.

The Sigma DP1 Merrill, while falling in the same price bracket, is a very different kind of beast. So is the more expensive Fuji X100S. On the test bench, we discovered that the GR can certainly hold its own.

Ribbon and bow

This bow and ribbon is an example of what is known as applique work — a posh way of saying ‘stuck on’. The carving can be glued to a fire surround, mirror frame or box, for example, pinned discretely in place through the central knot and the deep junctions.

This is a simple design, especially in its surface treatment. However, it’s worth exploring the many other ways of carving and decorating ribbons and bows; you’ll find them joined together or with complicated rucks and folds in their surfaces.

Orientate the grain across the design; this will give the most strength.
