SUKHOI’S PROTOTYPE Su-35-1 multi-role fighter, ‘901 Blue’, undertook its first flight from Zhukovsky, near Moscow, on February 18. Built at the KnAAPO factory in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, it was completed in August 2007, just in time for the MAKS 2007 airshow. The aircraft was airfreighted to Zhukovsky inside an An-124 just before the show, where it was then placed on static display (see Sukhoi’s Su-35 Makes Its Debut, November, p20). Since then it had been completing a series of ground tests and was expected to have flown by November, but this was delayed by three months, for unknown reasons.

NETHERLANDS MINISTER of Defence Henk Kamp told the Dutch Parliament on October 17 that a final decision on the planned acquisition of six new CH-47Fs in the 2007 — 2011 timeframe will now be taken before the year-end. However, he said the upgrade of the eleven surviving CH-47Ds in the current Royal Netherlands Air Force fleet to CH-47F standard will have to be delayed by ‘several years.’ This is because the budget assigned to the project is insufficient to cover all of the costs (updates Netherlands Requests CH-47Fs, November, p10).

ALGERIA HAS reached agreement with Russia to return 15 MiG-29s delivered in 2006/7. Mikhail Dmitriev, head of the Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Co-operation, held talks on February 6 with Algerian armed forces chief of staff Salah Ahmed Gaid about their return.
In 2006, Algeria ordered 28 MiG-29SMT-2s and six MiG-29UBTs through Rosoboronexport (see More Details Announced on Algerian Arms Deals, May 2006, p26).
