ANOTHER CHAPTER of aviation history closed at the end of February, when 800 Naval Air Sauadron (NAS) returned with HMS Invincible, after six months in the Adriatic. During its time there it had been carrying out reconnaissance and Combat Air Patrol (CAP) missions in support of the United Nations Operation Deny Flight. Its return marked the last operational deployment of the Falklands War victor, the Sea Harrier FRS.l. However, at the same time, a new and infinitely more capable type is about to replace it on the front line.

IN JANUARY 1978, the Allied Air Forces Central Europe (AAFCE) staged its first Tactical Leadership Programme (HP) course at Fiirstenfeldbruck AB, Germany, after Air Force leaders recognised a need to improve their pilots’ leadership skills in multi-national air operations. Responding to that requirement, six nations — Belgium, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and the United States — signed a Memorandum of Understanding to participate in the programme.

THE AIR UNIT of the Royal Malaysian Police (Unit Udara Polis — UUP) was created in 1978 to combat smuggling, illegal immigration, piracy, and illegal fishing which includes the practice of ‘fish bombing’.

THE 1999 Royal International Air Tattoo which took place during July 24-25 was hot…and we are not just referring to the temperature. The event attracted a record-breaking 483 aircraft, and crowds for the weekend reached 190,000. Easily attracting the most attention was the B-2A Spirit which was parked at the western end of the static line-up, and flew on both days.

THE IMPORTANCE OF accurate and timely battlefield aerial reconnaissance information cannot be understated. Knowing the activities and intent of hostile forces can give a tremendous advantage, with the potential to swing the successful outcome of a battle. It is for this reason, even with the National Defence surveillance system of sophisticated satellites, that each of the armed forces has supported a special reconnaissance aircraft.

Remembered with honour

WEST OF NANCY in the Lorraine Region of France, is the French National Cemetery of Choloy. In the northwest section, are headstones of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.At least one of these dates back to World War One, but most mark the final resting place of Allied servicemen who died in 1939-1945, the majority of them airmen. In all, there are 1,650 French and 461 Allied war graves.

Red Flag 93-1

NELLIS AFB, the self-styled ‘Home of the Fighter Pilot’, is a major Tactical Air Command airfield situated no more than eight miles from the glitzy town of Las Vegas, Nevada. The base itself occupies an area of over 11,000 acres, and has aprons of a size which can — and have, in the past — accommodated upwards of 400 fighter aircraft.
