Story behind the shot.

Photographer James Sheppard lets us in on the secrets behind his beautiful flower shot.

What made you decide to take this lovely photo?

I went for a day out at Exbury Gardens in Hampshire back in May. I had heard that the spring flowers were in full bloom, so I took my camera to get some colourful floral shots. I came across these pink azaleas, and decided that they would make a great macro subject due to the beautiful detail on the petals and in the centre of the flower.

What camera and settings did you use to get these

PERFECT RICTURE

A Little Rock entrepreneur encourages fans to «kiss the competition goodbye»

As a producer, casting agent, stylist and makeup artist, it’s no wonder that Little Rock’s Brooke Duszota is intrigued by all facets of the production world. It was this interest that led her to begin researching the specifics of cosmetic formulation, wanting to create products that were highly pigmented and able to last under hot studio lighting. «With a degree in marketing, years of experience in sales, a background in modeling and certification in makeup, it was a natural transition for me to wholeheartedly embrace the entrepreneurial calling,» she

PEARL-BORDERED FRITILLARY

By Ian Ward

Camera: Canon EOS5D Mk II Lens: EF 180mm f/3.5LMacro

Exposure: l/125sec at f/11 (ISO 800)

Ian says: «This was taken in Bentley Wood in the New Forest. The small pearl-bordered fritillary had just emerged and it was a perfect specimen! I spent time searching for the butterfly in a good position with a clean background and used a higher ISO rating as I was handholding.»

LEE FROST: I’m used to being presented with images in Expert Critique that have obvious flaws, and it makes my job easier because I’ve got something to write about! But my immediate

Stylish handsome men in red «doublets»

The summer red, faded favorite flowers. Time is impossible to cheat, but it can be negotiated! Purple foliage of some trees and shrubs can permanently extend the feeling of the summer extravaganza in the garden. Bold bright red accents are particularly impressive with the background light colored roses and flower herbaceous perennials.

Usually leaves most trees and shrubs are colored green, albeit in different shades. But as in every rule, among the flora there are exceptions. One of them — krasnolistnyh plants «haircuts» which delight the unusual play of colors. They are especially good in combination with the «neighbors», decorated

The Lizard

Suraj P. Singh is a Smart Photography reader from Navi Mumbai. He says that he has edited the picture (contrast, brightness and some sharpening) but wants to know how the framing could be improved.

Suraj, keep in mind that the background is just as important as the main subject. In your picture, the background is disturbing — the bright sky and the out of focus structure are competing for attention. May be you had no choice or may be you were afraid that the lizard would run away if you spent too much time trying to frame it

How can I brighten foregrounds?

I have been following your magazine’s tip to include foreground interest in my landscapes, and managed to find this statue situated in front of a river. However, it kept coming out really dark. How can I make it brighter?

Clark Brooker, yia Facebook

Getting the foreground and background of your photos properly exposed can be difficult, especially in tricky lighting conditions. If the sun is behind your main foreground subject then it can often appear underexposed, yet if you try to expose for the foreground you run the risk of the background being overexposed.

Correct the exposure

Bring out the

FRAME within the frame

If you’re simply using branches to frame a landscape, or a doorway to frame a portrait, your compositions aren’t realizing their full potential. More complex framing devices can add compositional power to your pictures. Here are three examples:

1

Create a focal point. The mirror in this photo acts to focus attention on the center of interest—the reflection of the model’s face. In this case, the frame is particularly effective because it outlines the mirror with a lighter tone, and our eyes tend to go to the lightest part of a photograph.

2

Establish context. This picture would still work

Bokeh Is Japanese for Blur

Bokeh is the often-mispronounced term for those wonderful round, out-of-focus highlights that we love floating throughout the backgrounds of photographs. So just what is photographic bokeh and how does it differ from a blur of the same name made in Photoshop? The answer this time in the «Digital Photographer’s Notebook.»

There are three factors that make pleasing bokeh: pinpoint highlights, a lens with a longer focal length than normal for the camera, and a large aperture. Surprisingly, the most beautiful bokeh is not always with the widest f-stop. Oh, by the way, Japanese speakers say

AIR Flair

Kick out the blahs

My assignment? To capture Michael Jai White, a martial artist and Hollywood actor, in mid flight for Muscle & Fitness magazine. This was back in 2006, and it wasn’t exactly an easy shot to bag, but I bet most Pop Photo readers could pull it off with equipment they already own. Here’s how:

1

Find an athlete. You need one who’s accomplished and fit enough to strike a clean pose repeatedly. Besides the perfect form, an accomplished athlete will minimize the chance of someone—or some thing, like your lights—getting hurt.
