Russian neutron device will help discover water on Mars

Developed in Russia device — one of a dozen instruments, which will be equipped with an American rover Curiosity. It is intended to find its water and saturated with mineral high-energy neutrons.

The device, called "Dynamic neutron albedo" (DAN) was created in Lab space gamma spectroscopy of the Space Research Institute (IKI). Leading designer Igor Mitrofanov said that DAN — is the primary means of exploration, if it finds something interesting at a particular point, other devices will help to clarify the situation.

Russian instrument DAN found oases on Mars

DAN Russian instrument on board the Mars rover Curiosity found in the crater Gale "oases" — "spots" with high water content, the origin of which is unclear, deputy supervisor of the experiment DAN Maxim Litvak.

Speaking at a conference in Houston LPSC, Litvack said that since the Curiosity rover’s landing in August 2012 DAN performed several hundred measurements of the surface along the path of motion. Processing of data showed that the proportion of water in the soil layer thickness of about 60 centimeters (maximum depth "view" of the instrument DAN) varies from 1% to 4%.

Mars Rover Curiosity got the first samples of the substance inside the drilled rock

NASA Curiosity rover for the first time during the study of the Red Planet has received samples of material from inside the stone drilled them.
