Time in Mind

AS A SPECIES, WE ARE FASCINATED BY TIME. WE’VE BEEN MEASURING IT FOR SOME 4,000 YEARS AND CELEBRATING ITS PASSAGE FOR FAR LONGER.

We synchronize our daily activities using any number of diverse devices — ranging from the mechanical to the subatomic — and yet we rarely stop to think how it is that without such devices we still do a pretty good job of keeping time, knowing how long it will take to get back from the shops, or overtaking the car in front before hitting the oncoming traffic.

How do we do this? And why is it that

THE Gold standard

2 0 1 2 BMW R 1 2 0 0 G S versus 2 0 1 3 R 1 2 0 0 G S

«Shocked at the difference!”

“Amazed a bike can improve so much in one year.”

“As different as two bikes with the same name could possibly be.”

Test Ride participants had the opportunity to ride the 2012 and ’13 GS models back to back, and the results were dramatic. Tough they still look similar in silhouette and even on the spec sheet, BMW’s all-new R1200GS couldn’t be more different than the bike that it replaces, as the

SOCIAL CLIMBING

Social housing

This provocative social housing project in Champigny-sur-Магne, the realisation of a competition win, took a unique approach to the design brief. Aiming to revitalise and renew an urban zone characterised by a jumble of different building types from the 1970s, the programme called for mixed use: housing, commercial space, and so forth. Instead of taking the predictable path of replacing the ‘mess’ with order, the mixed-up with clarity, the architects chose to celebrate the chaos with a strategy of ‘urban collage’. In effect, they refused to interpret the context and decided instead to incorporate it, literally, into the

Mark Gredzinski tells the story of Leylands brave attempt at something really different — the T45 Road train.

With only the ageing Marathon and Buffalo in Leyland’s heavy truck portfolio, the new T45 Road train was long overdue to prop up the manufacturer’s fortunes and gain credibility in the marketplace. From its lash-up origins using the old Ergomatic cab pressings, the ungainly Marathon eventually earned its stripes in Mk2 form, but it was desperately in need of replacement.

Ogle Design of Letchworth did the styling work on what was known as the new C4Q cab. alongside the Leyland engineers. The idea was to attack the premium heavyweight market head on and stop the erosion of Leyland dwindling share

fuelled by speed

Jessica Bracey speaks to the go-to man for car photography, JUSTIN LEIGHTON, to find out how he captures speed.

Pedal to the metal, eye on the prize and camera ready to capture speeds of up to 189mph, this adrenaline-fuelled genre is not a slow paced feat as car photographer Justin Leighton can testify. «The fascination with cars started when I was about four years old and my friend’s dad had a hot rod in the garage. I remember going in there and he started up this massive V8 dragster engine. As a small child the noise was totally all-encompassing and

CONDENSED READING

A round-up of the latest photography books on the market

• ON STAGE by Michael Nether, £29.90 Michael Nether has, at least according to the introduction to this book, had a varied and stimulating career in various fields of photography. You wouldn’t really know it based on the evidence provided here. This book focuses exclusively on his work photographing musicians and other celebrities on stage. The result is a drab, monotonous affair, picture after picture of unfocused, greyscale famous faces, an inordinate number of which seem to have been caught at especially unflattering moments.

• DOMAINS OF INFLUENCE by

The Amateur Photographer Masterclass with Tom Mackie

A beguiling mixture of British and Continental influences, Jersey is in a league of its own when it comes to landscapes. Tom shows five AP readers how to make the most of its classic landmarks. Gill Mullins reports.

SOME 100 miles south of the mainland lie the Channel Islands, with roots in both England and France but with a flavour all of their own. Jersey is the largest and most southerly, just 14 miles off the Normandy coast. Its 45 square miles pack in an extraordinary range of landscapes, from rugged coves to
