IDEX IS NOW a well-established and respected international defence exhibition that grows in size and stature with every biennial show. Although it features land, sea and air defence products, interest at the third IDEX, held between March 16-20, centred on two of the most important air defence contracts to be fought for in the last years of the 20th century, both of which will be from the host country, the UAE.

The first is UAE’s $5 billion advanced fighter contract which Lockheed Martin was quietly confident of winning with its F-16 on the eve of the show.

Slight tremor in the United Arab Emirates

Earthquakes of magnitude 2.2 on the Richter scale tryasnulo Fujairah and Masafi area on Monday afternoon. The earthquake, which some people feel in Massafi, will not result in losses. Engineer Mohammad Mashroum, Director, Research Division at Dubai Municipality, said that the earthquake occurred in a known seismic zone, which caused a small earthquake in November 2002, in March and September 2007 and February 2008. The site is located in mountainous terrain. These tremors were attributed to tectonic activity, and stresses that accumulate from quarry blasts near the area. —Emirates 24
