The red-legged partridge is a gamebird in the pheasant family, and is also known as the French partridge to distinguish from the English and Grey partridge species. It has a light brown back, grey breast and buff belly. It has a white face with a black gorget, rufous-streaked flanks and, of course, red legs. When disturbed it is more likely to run than fly, but will fly a short distance on its rounded wings if necessary. It is primarily a seed eating species, although the young take insects as an essential protein supply. Its call is

Little owls

The little owl is one of the most widely distributed species of owl, native to warmer parts of Europe, North Africa, and Asia east to Korea. It was introduced to Great Britain in the 19th century, and to southern New Zealand in the early 20th century. As the name would suggest, it’s not the largest bird, measuring from 230-275mm in length. It is recognisable by its white speckled brown plumage, large head, long legs, yellow eyes and its distinctive white eyebrows’ which give it a somewhat stern expression. The little owl is partly diurnal, so you don’t have to go

Albatross prove: a hundred years of mercury in the biosphere has doubled

Analysis of the black-footed albatross feathers showed a doubling of their content of organic mercury. Since these birds are the culmination of the food pyramid, the fact that the accumulation of mercury may be relevant to other "sovereign" predators, including to humans. Paleontologists have discovered in Liaoning province remains a small lizard with unusually short plumage, who lived in China 156 million years ago, which suggests the diversity of species of dinosaurs have feathers in the Jurassic period, according to a paper published in the journal Nature Communications.

For a long time, paleontologists believed that none of the known species of dinosaurs had feathers, reminiscent of the decoration of modern birds. In the late 20th century, this idea beginning to change rapidly with the emergence of a growing number of finds from the Chinese province of Liaoning and Inner Mongolia, where scientists

Brawl at Ravens end reconciliation with kisses

Ornithologists have found that vorony quarreled shortly after intense clashes begin to make up, touching each other's beak and feathers mutually scrubbing. This behavior was first observed in birds. In the behavior of primates, as well as other social mammals, is common practice reconciliation: after an argument, the participants behave with each other far more cordial and attentive. This is manifested particularly clearly, if the participants were skirmishes in the "friendly" allied relations within the group.

According to zoologists, such reconciliation make "friendship stronger" — in other words, do not allow the group to remain under the influence of
