Yugoslav air defences.

YUGOSLAVIA’S CAPACITY to sustain and counter NATO’s attacks on its territory should not be under-estimated. The country still has a large, well-equipped army and a highly-trained air force, which also includes an extensive air defence system of aircraft, surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) and anti-aircraft artillery (AAA). Whilst its aircraft could quickly prove to be vulnerable to NATO attacks, the combination of uniquely rugged geography, SAM and AAA mobility will make it very difficult to render the skies of Yugoslavia safe for Allied air operations in the short term. Volkel Open Day

Kees van der Mark reports on the annual Royal Netherlands Air Force Open Days.

THIS YEAR’S Royal Netherlands Air Force Open Days were held at Volkel air base, one of the three current Dutch F-16 bases, on June 18 and 19. Two operational squadrons (311 and 312 Sqns) and a training unit (306 Sqn) all operate the Mid Life Update version of this versatile aircraft at Volkel.

AIRCRAFT FROM FOUR nations began arriving at RAF St Mawgan for Exercise Resolute Response on April 27. The maritime exercise involved aircraft from Germany (Tornados from MFG.2), Norway (P-3N and P-3Cs from 333 Skv), USA (an EC-24A from FEWSG, plus P-3Bs from VP-64 and VP-66) and the UK The exercise finished on May 15.

Other aircraft taking part in Britain included eight F-16As from the 169th FS/Illinois ANG, which arrived at RAF Fairford on April 30 accompanied by four KC-135Es from 108th AREFS/Illinois ANG. For many, this was the last chance to see the unit operating its F-16s, as it

IN FEBRUARY 1994 161 Filo of the Turkish Air Force at Bandirma received its first LANTIRN-equipped Block 40 F-16C, making the unit the first outside the USAF to gain the LANTIRN night-attack capability. Block 40 F-16s have longer undercarriage legs to accommodate the two underfuselage LANTIRN pods — targeting on the right and navigation on the left — bulged undercarriage doors and relocated landing lights on the nosegear doors.

Turkish Black Hawks Deploy to Afghanistan

THREE TURKISH UH-60L Black Hawk utility helicopters were deployed to Afghanistan on May 30 in support of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). The helicopters arrived at Kabul International Airport on board two Antonov An-124-100 cargo aircraft operated by the Ukrainian Antonov Design Bureau International Cargo Transport service.

A Turkish Air Force C-130 Hercules supported the deployment bringing in the manpower and all necessary equipment. Turkey sent a total of 56 personnel, including 12 aircrew members and 16 technicians.
