Mexican Navy Hawkeyes

Two E-2C Hawkeyes passed through RAF Brize Norton on June 21 and 22, bound for a new home in Mexico. But so far the journey has probably been more than they bargained for, as Alan Warnes reports.

AS YOU read these pages, the Mexican Navy should, hopefully, have taken delivery of two Northrop Grumman E-2C Hawkeyes. In doing so, it will have completed an undertaking that started two years ago when the Mexican Government, embarking upon a modernisation programme for the Navy acquired three E-2C Daya (Kites) from the Israel Defence Force/Air Force (IDF/AF).

Kosovo — Airpower wins

AS AIR FORCES Monthly closed for press on June 4 a peace deal for the Kosovo conflict had been agreed to by the Yugoslav Parliament and President Slobodan Milosevic. Talks between the Yugoslav leadership and Russian special envoy Viktor Chernomyrdin and Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari, the European Union’s envoy in Belgrade, on June 2/3, finally saw the acceptance of the G8 peace proposals which includes all five NATO demands for ending hostilities.

The first airshow, ten years ago, took place at the old Jakarta airport, Kamayoran. Just as it had been then, the latest technology available in Indonesia was put on display, but this show also set out to demonstrate a willingness to co-operate and expand capabilities.

It is well known that the region enjoys considerable economic growth and this has enabled many countries to purchase or manufacture sophisticated aircraft. Naturally, there was particular emphasis

HMS Hawkins remembered

On D-Day Plus One, from the deck of Tank Landing Ship LST 525, Leading Writer Alwyn Bowen, In the thick of the action, took time to observe British ships shelling shore defences. From one heavy cruiser, he could see the shells exiting the Parrels en route to reinforced-concrete gun butteries on the Normandy shore. The ship’s elegant profile was unmistakable — it was HMS Hawkins, on which he had served in the Mediterranean.

Named after the navigator, naval commander and slave trader Sir John Hawkins, and bearing the motto Nil desperandum, HMS Hawkins was a heavy cruiser with a tonnage
