PINK FLOYD’S CURIOUS LITTLE DITTY FROM 1967 IS EVOCATIVE OF THE BRITISH LOVE AFFAIR WITH BICYCLES. SINCE AT LEAST THE 1880S, WE HAVE BEEN BALANCING ATOP CHAIN-DRIVEN TWO WHEELERS FOR ALL MANNER OF ACTIVITIES. CYCLING REPRESENTS FREEDOM. HERE CW SALUTES THREE FIRMS THAT STILL MAKE BIKES IN BRITAIN.
Long before Sir Chris Hoy lifted British cycling to new heights, some sources believe, the first mechanically propelled two-wheeled contraption was built by a Scottish blacksmith called Kirkpatrick MacMillan in 1839. The penny-farthings of the mid-Victorian years were popular with daredevil riders despite their dangerous reputation, but it was not

3D printing Moon bases, rockets, and… food?
The prime challenge of living in space — besides the inherent danger — is figuring out how to bring enough with you to survive. Equipment, oxygen, food and water all need to be hauled there: or could there be an alternative solution?
Every kilogram that must be hauled into space for human crew requirements represents one kilogram less that can be used for science experiments, for example. More capable rockets is one solution to this problem. But what about actually making the components and food you need on site?
The idea actually isn’t

Short films are today’s medium of choice for inventive storytellers. Stephen Graves shows us how to direct a taut, honed masterpiece….
BEFORE YOU START
Know what to do and when to do it. A film is born in these stages:
Pre-production: scripting, raising funds and planning.
Production: shooting the film.
Post-production: editing, grading and visual effects.
Be resourceful. Dead Mon’s Shoes director Shane Meadows made a short film with his phone. Dedicated cams are expensive to hire, so ask friends if you can borrow their DSLRs and use cheap but capable editing software such as Lightworks (lwks.com).
Take time over

While making panoramas of vast landscapes, you can create impact by including an interesting foreground element. Due to their unique aspect ratio, panoramas provide for a wide expanse which can help you make the best of the foreground. For example, when shooting a forest you can include a few blades of grass immediately in front of you. This is a stronger compositional choice and conveys more information about the scenery.
Stitch With a Twist
If you prefer stitching multiple photographs together by simply using the panorama mode, you can also have quite a lot of fun. Previsualise the final image

Making your own furniture is a sign that you’re a practical craftsman. How about taking it a step further by making your own tools for making your furniture? The process for making chisels and gouges isn’t as intimidating as it might seem. Two propane torches will do anything a coal forge can do, so you won’t need expensive special equipment.
To begin with, let’s talk about steel. The important ingredient in steel is carbon. More carbon in the steel means a longer edge life and a better ability to accept heat treatment. Low-carbon steel is used for any item that

Everyone wants a robot to serve them drinks and pick up their socks. Yet, despite how mundane such tasks may sound, these chores require a sophisticated robot costing more than the average automobile. The sensors and programming required to discern old socks from sleeping cats requires extensive computing power, not to mention considerable skill on the part of the programmer.
Your first robot doesn’t have to be a mimic of C-3PO. It’s better to start small, and grow your robots as you gain experience. The ArdBot II is designed for simpler tasks, so it requires only a small body, inexpensive

Everyone can be an honest-to-goodness flmmaker thanks to Lomography, that champion of analogue film. Fancy making a movie for Blueprint? Read on…
In these all-encompassing digital days Blueprint has decided to look in the opposite direction for a while and celebrate the warmth and humanity of the analogue age, when the letter ‘i’ was just another vowel.
Lomography has long-championed the world of film, keeping its eye focused on the world of sprockets and emulsions. A few months ago it launched the Lomokino, a hand-cranked, 35mm movie camera, so we grabbed some and passed them to a hand-picked group of
