US women to fly combat missions

US DEFENSE SECRETARY Les Aspin announced on April 28 at the Pentagon that the US military forces were being ordered to allow women to fly aircraft on combat missions. Although there has always been Pentagon opposition to expanding the combat roles of women, this was lessened by the active role played by women in Operation Desert Storm. About 35,000 service women played a part in the Gulf War and five of them were killed during the conflict, including Chinook pilot Major Marie Rossi, while two were taken prisoner by the Iraqis.

Congress repealed the ban on women flying combat missions

Missions to mine asteroids

NASA

In NASA’s 2013 budget it announced a proposal to capture an asteroid and drag it into a stable lunar orbit to be visited by future astronauts. It might sound far-fetched, but the technology behind it is relatively simple.

The plan is to launch a spacecraft powered by ion thrusters, which will then make its way to an asteroid beyond the Moon. Once reaching its target, the spacecraft would capture the asteroid in a large bag and, over a number of years, move it into a stable orbit around the Moon. This could then be visited and studied by astronauts

Megafortress Megapack

Digital Integration/Action Sixteen, CD ROM, £144.99

ANOTHER IN THE growing library of CD ROMs from sims publishers — this time from Action Sixteen. Again this format has provided an opportunity to repackage an old favourite, in this case the Megafortress bomber simulation. I particularly like this one because, apart from anything else, you have to play a number of roles within the one simulation. A total of five different crew members have jobs critical to the successful mission and they all need to be played out by you.

I’m going to take you through the second program on the CD

Fairford Firepower

RAF Fairford is being used as the launch pad for much of the USAF’s heavy bomber commitment during Operation Allied Force. AFM visited the Gloucestershire airfield in May to take a look at modern strategic bombing.

The Cold War days of Strategic Air Command, it was the B-47 and B-52 bomber fleets that were to provide America and NATO with a global bombing and nuclear deterrent force. Today, precision strike and interdiction strike missions are the preferred options, but one of the weapons platforms available to planners is the final variant of a 50-year old Boeing design — the B-52H
