THE TROUBLES, the conflict between Unionists and Loyalists in Northern Ireland, began in the 1960s and only really ended in the 1990s after years of negotiation. The Troubles also gave rise to a new wave of photography as people sought to use art to process what was happening to their country.

With his new book, called Northern Ireland: 30 Years of Photography, Colin Graham is exploring this work. Taking 1980 as his starting point, Graham traces the developments in photography through turbulent times.

‘Collectively, these images show a sceptical interrogation of what the politics of Northern Ireland have done to the place,’ says Graham. ‘They’re not looking at political events or figures, but at the effects that high politics has on local lives and spaces.’

While dating her future husband, this homeowner told him how she equated log homes with American history. To her delight, he expressed how much he also wanted a log home. After their marriage, they embarked on making their mutual desire a reality. Living in Washington, D.C., they bought a 42-acre parcel in northern Maine that boasted two lakes and an adjoining stream, and built a vacation home of 8-inch-diameter full-round logs near the stream and one of the lakes. Exercise NORTHERN EDGE

US ALASKAN Command staged Exercise NORTHERN EDGE 2004 between June 7 and 16, a joint service training exercise at Elmendorf AFB, Eielson AFB and from USS John C Stennis (CVN 74) operating in the Gulf of Alaska, involving over 160 aircraft.

This was the first time Exercise NORTHERN EDGE had been held in June — it is usually held during the winter to maximise night and cold weather training — but the timing was changed to accommodate the worldwide scheduling of units and a carrier strike group.
