THE MIKOYAN-Gurevich MiG-31 Foxhound is one of the most powerful interceptors flying today. It owes its outstanding capability to a combination of performance, weaponry, and avionics. In the late 1960s, the Soviet Government began the search for a new long-range, extended endurance interceptor to replace its Tupolev Tu-28s and MiG-25 Foxbats. It was intended to counter the threat of low-flying cruise missiles launched from NATO/US B-52s and B-ls, which the MiG-25 was unable to do. MiG-25s functioned well as high-altitude interceptors with the help of ground control data links, as their original mission was to intercept the USAF’s high-altitude Mach 3 B-70 Valkyrie bomber.
