The youngest ship to be broken

In Ships Mail (SM, July) Andrew Mackinnon asks if the 15-year-old Albert Rickmers was the youngest ship ever to be broken up. The shipping business is very cyclical, and during economic downturns many vessels are broken up prematurely.

After the 1973 oil crisis, tankers were sent for lay-up after completion, and many were scrapped, including BP Tanker’s British Diplomat (1963/30,815gt), which was only 12 years old. Similar things happened during the 1930s Great Depression, most notably with Atlantic Transport Line’s large passenger cargo ships Minnewaska (1923/21,726grt) and Minnetonka (1924/21,998grt), which went to the breakers aged only 11 and ten years

The War at Sea

At least 32,000 Merchant Navy personnel were killed or died during the war at sea between 1939 and 1945. One of those who survived was James Hamilton-Smith who, having served in the Merchant Navy in the 1920s, re-joined in July 1940. A series of notebooks and diaries he maintained, presented here by his grandson David Mitchell, reveal a little of the rudimentary training that British seamen were given, as well as a small part of the battle to beat the German U-boats.

James Hamilton-Smith was born in Wolsingham, County Durham on 21 February 1907. He joined the Merchant Marine in

The Tall Ship in Glasgow

John Hannavy tells the story of the tail ship Glen lee , a three-masted steel-hulled barque, launched fully rigged in December 1896 and now a museum ship at the Riverside Museum on Point house Quay, Glasgow.

It must have taken quite a leap of faith, and a good deal of imagination, on the part of the Clyde Maritime Trust back in the early 1990s to believe that the abandoned and vandalised hull of Glen lee, which then lay in an all-but-forgotten dock in Spain, could become the centrepiece of a new maritime museum. But today, lovingly restored to her former

Hurtigruten’s time machine to the north of Norway

Every evening at the Hurtigruten (Fast Route) pier in Bergen, Norway a ship slips her lines to begin a six-night coastal voyage, making 34 cargo and passenger calls at all hours of the day and night, en route to Kirkenes, the turnaround port beyond the North Cape close to the Russian border. The ships pause there three hours before returning southbound, arriving back in Bergen on the afternoon of the 12th day. That same evening, she’s off again.

To maintain the service, 11 ships are required, with ten of them roll-on, roll-off

It collapsed after a fire that lasted 102 minutes. Second liner hit the South Tower at 9:02, and 56 minutes it too collapsed. In the evening it collapsed another building complex. A third plane crashed into the
