UNITED INK

Garden City, NY

September 6-8, 2013

Anyone who has ever attended a convention hosted by Long Island ink entrepreneur, Tattoo Lou, will tell you that the man and his team pull out all the stops to make each event bigger and better than the previous show.

This year the United Ink show will be housed in the Cradle of

TATTOOERS POV with NATE BEAVERS

Q and A With Timmy B.

I have had the awesome pleasure of interviewing one of the best tattooists on the scene today, Timmy B. This guy is not only a very talented artist, but he is an amazingly genuine person, as well. I see his work being emulated and reproduced all the time. I wanted to know his thoughts on that subject as well as ask him some technical questions about his brilliant tattoos. I feel like his work ethic should be the standard for any up-and-coming tattooist. He has become a renewed inspiration for me to strive for

FUN IN PHILLY

I recently wrote about Les Skuse, Jimmie Skuse , the Bristol Tattoo Club, and the upcoming Philadelphia Convention. This is a follow up of the whole experience. As a collector, talking and sharing with other collectors is always great fun and a learning experience. The history is as important as the collectable item itself.

This year was truly historical at Troy Timpel’s Philly Convention due to the fact that the Bristol Tattoo Club (est. 1953) was making its first appearance in the United States since founder, Les Skuse, visited in 1956. Just the history of the members

SACRED TATTOO NYC HOSTS INK MASTER BASH

Fans and viewers of the tattoo reality competition show Ink Master had the opportunity to party together and watch an episode side-by-side with cast members of the Spike TV hit.

Shop manager Kevin Wilson and the crew from Sacred Tattoo NYC hosted this very special Ink Master party one night on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The Double Down Saloon on Avenue A was the scene crime, and tat fans filled the place in hopes of rubbing elbows and sharing a drink with show alum. Ink Master competitors under the Double roof included Sarah Miller, Little Mike, Clint Cummings, Lalo Yuda,

ON THE ROAD

MYSTIC OWL TATTOO Marietta, Georgia

This month Skin&lnktraveled down south to the “land of peaches and pecans” in North Georgia to visit Tara and Vince Villavazo’s Mystic Owl Tattoo in Marietta, Georgia. Just northeast of Atlanta, Marietta sits in the cool shade of historic Kennesaw Mountain and is famous for KFC’s “big chicken” which (incidentally) is right around the corner from the big-league tattoo artists assembled at Mystic Owl Tattoo.

The spacious and open studio is relatively new to the area, but it is making big waves.

“Vince has always aspired to open his own studio. He wanted to provide

INTERNATIONAL Ink Aleksandr Pashkvov

Among the numerous realistic tattoo experts that come from Russia today, thirty-five-year-old Aleksandr Pashkov who is from Barnaul, Siberia, truly stands out. His highly elegant nature-inspired images in color and black-and-grey are lovingly composed and executed and are unsurpassed in their technical perfection. His versatility and relentless pursuit of perfection have let this quiet man from the Altai Mountains become one of the top masters in Russia. Enough reason to exchange a few words with Aleksandr Pashkov, tattoo virtuoso!

TM: Aleksandr, how does someone from Siberia become a tat-tooist—and such a good one on top of it? Did you have

INSIDE TATTOO NATION

In 2005, Eric Schwartz, 64, a Colorado/Los Angeles-based photographer and first-time director of the documentary Tattoo Nation, was sitting in a diner waiting for his meal when a tattoo caught his attention. “I was having breakfast at one of my usual haunts when the manager noted that I was not getting the service a customer should. She asked, ‘Is there something I can help you with?’ I noticed she had a small amount of tattoo peeking out of her sleeveless blouse and I asked her to tell me about it,” recalled Schwartz. “She said, ‘I decided to dedicate my body

INK AROUND THE WORLD

NEPAL: THE LAND OF INK AND BUDDHA

Everyone was more than happy to have their portraits shot and I had my first sample shots to show other potential “tattoo models” here in Pokhara. Before leaving, Hari gave me the address of Master Mohan, a tattoo artist extraordinaire who had the oldest shop in Kathmandu.

The next day I hailed a cab, handed the driver Mohan’s address and not ten minutes later found myself outside Mohan’s tattoo parlor. Mohan was ready to meet with me and could not be more friendly. Mohan prides himself as much a teacher of the art

Incredible Year! Incredible Issue!

I don’t get out to the expos-much anymore and my tattoo collecting days are behind me.

However, I always feel like I’ve been brought up-to-speed on the goings on in the tattoo world when the Skin&Ink anniversary issue arrives in my mailbox each year.

Getting to see all of the big conventions, the fantastic shops, and artists, (and all of those pretty girls!) in one issue is a true gift for a life-long tattoo lover like myself.

It’s good to see that the tattoo scene is alive and well across the world and that my favorite tattoo magazine is able
