YOUR RENO & DECOR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

MY HUSBAND WANTS AN EXTRA-LARGE FLATSCREEN TV, BUT I’M WORRIED IT WILL DOMINATE OUR TINY LIVING AREA. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE TO KEEP THE

A huge TV screen can be too «in-your-face», if what you want is a cosy, art-filled space. Create a feature wall that the TV screen will blend into. Start by using darker wall hues — grey or wood tones go well with black TV screens. Incorporate the TV screen into a wall of stylish bookshelves with a console below to hold set-top boxes, remote controls, DVDs and other electronic gadgets.

As your living area is

Blind dates, fly cutters, and dreaming big

A FEW MONTHS AGO, I had a blind date go bad.

First let me define blind date. One perk of being a rookie homebuilder is almost every week for the past year I’ve been introduced to a new tool or gadget in the shop. Each time I encounter one of these unfamiliar tools, I experience a range of emotions—a concoction of excitement, nervousness, and anxiousness. That’s why I affectionately call these first encounters blind dates.

My date on this night was with the most intimidating tool yet.

After researching several options for cutting

MID-CENTURY REFERENCES, A MUTED PALETTE, AND HINTS OF NEW YORK INFUSE A 105-SQM CONDO UNIT

The front door swings open, and your eyes immediately land on the black-and-white wallpaper that runs from the short entryway to the dining area. Its botanical print grabs attention without being overbearing—an ideal choice for the space, declares interior designer Gelo del Mundo, who wanted something brazen to break the long expanse of the wall.

That wallpaper somehow encapsulates Gelo’s design treatment for the three-bedroom corner condominium unit: bold and classic, but with soft angles. “As you would notice, there are a lot of references

TROJAN HORSE

Children love things they can climb on to and if you can get inside and hide — well, that’s a real bonus! So the legend of this famous horse and the part it played in the downfall of Troy inspired me to make the ultimate hide-and-seek toy.

The timber I used was Nordic redwood, which you can buy easily in a ready-planed state, or you can save a great deal of money by just getting the timber sawn and planing it yourself. However, if you decide to do this you will find the assistance of an electric planer a great

Closet

In front of me was a challenge to arrange storage of household goods, using the minimum quantity of furniture. It was the desire to make a new apartment as possible large, «air», not her closets and other «heavy» items.

Project. As a solution to one of the rooms you selected closet on the wall. And initially I aim was to make it so that it is harmoniously combined with the overall design of the room.

Therefore, when designing the wardrobe were selected following criteria:

• Facades from a natural tree with mirror;

• Hardware of high quality;

• effective use

Logology. Fascinating Fasteners.

Logs take a stand against nature’s worst.

Old World Origins.

Log cabins built on the frontier or even in later settlements didn’t use fasteners. Logs supported themselves at the corners, which were formed where walls intersected. Although these early American dwellings weren’t erected with any intention of permanence, corner-supported log walls provided durability. They were the premise of log building and had been such long before Scandinavians introduced stacked construction to America.

In his 1942 work Der Blockbau (translated into English as The Craft of Log Building), German architect-scholar Hermann Phleps observes that log walls «derive their structural strength primarily

Log-home: building

Construction Timeline

A step-by-step guide to building a log home.

BUILDING A LOG HOME is an exciting prospect but can seem a formidable challenge. Once the sequence is revealed, the process seems less intimidating and can proceed in an organized manner.

Preparing for Construction

Planning to build a log home can take from months to years. Finding just the right location, choosing a log-home provider, settling on a design, estimating costs, arranging for contractors and subs and securing financing are all grouped into what professional builders call “pre-construction activities.” Although thorough preparation during the pre-construction period greatly improves the ease

Inside the box. Affordable Makeovers.

7 do-overs that won’t un-do your bank balance.

Brilliant observations are sometimes also the simplest. Years ago, a very successful architect countered the observation that his clients had unlimited funds to spend on their home «Everybody’s on a budget,» he said. «It’s just a matter of how generous it is.»

Obviously, Scrooge McDuck or Jack Benny would present a different budget than, say, the Kardashians. More than just money, there would be a difference in approach, values, requirements and expected results, but all those issues are as important, if not more so, than the actual dollars in creating a budget.
