The Spirit of Jodhpur.

Designing a residence in Jodhpur was an interesting journey for Punebased architects Manish Banker and Shailesh Untwale of TAO Architecture Pvt Ltd, who set out to capture the spirit of the desert city in a contemporary idiom. Their design met modern living needs using local construction techniques and materials, rather than by transporting these from other areas.

‘We went to Jodhpur as students rather than as professionals,’ says Manish Banker of the initial trip he and Shailesh Untwale made to the desert city in response to Nisha and Satyendra Johri’s invitation to design a modern residence for them which would

NATURAL WONDER

Amid the lively, contemporary ramble of Los Angeles, landscape designer Scott Shrader has built a house that defines timeless comfort and calm. A small jewel box in West Hollywood’s decorating district that he shares with Mark Hemphill, it captures Southern California’s bright light and balmy air in rooms that overlook gardens, each as detailed as the interiors they adjoin. High ceilings, tall French doors, and walls painted a single creamy white evoke expansiveness in a home that’s only 1,500 square feet, an illusion bolstered by the flow from inside to out. Such seamless connectedness is a trademark for Shrader, whose

Logology. Fascinating Fasteners.

Logs take a stand against nature’s worst.

Old World Origins.

Log cabins built on the frontier or even in later settlements didn’t use fasteners. Logs supported themselves at the corners, which were formed where walls intersected. Although these early American dwellings weren’t erected with any intention of permanence, corner-supported log walls provided durability. They were the premise of log building and had been such long before Scandinavians introduced stacked construction to America.

In his 1942 work Der Blockbau (translated into English as The Craft of Log Building), German architect-scholar Hermann Phleps observes that log walls «derive their structural strength primarily

A feast for the four walls.

How to make your home unrecognizable? How to change your character? It is not necessary to carry back and forth to buy furniture and antique chests inlaid with mother of pearl. We must start with his own soul.

What she’s lying? Suggested romantic mood? Suddenly wished luxury? Dreaming of a retro — like in the pictures in my grandmother’s album? Or drastically rejuvenated, hungry for bright colors and experimenting with forms?

What is good in the wallpaper in the home textiles — to change them, do not need to contrive large repairs. And the result is simply amazing.

On the wall of the main shooting club Los Angeles hangs a warning: «Warning! Do not be an idiot. Do not point the gun at anyone, least loaded, unloaded though — you can quickly become a dead stuffed. » When I, in spite of repeated warnings instructor Eugene Zarapina, sent him a blank Glock 17, he patiently averted my hand to the side, took my finger off the trigger and calmly repeated: «The trunk is always directed toward the target.»

I met with Eugene, certainly not in the American club and the French. More specifically, in the «French shooting club», located in Mytishchi in the former Olympic shooting range «Dynamo». Olympic roots are still visible in the emblem of the club, two looking up the gun form the base of the Moscow high-rise that we have seen in the logo 0limpiady-80. Only instead of rings, of course, the bullets. Or shots. Or a hole in the target. I did the first time several of these holes, but strangely at the left side of the plywood box. I tried to explain

EASY ROOM RE-DO

If you’re on a budget, spruce up your space in small doses—start with an extra room that you can turn into a guest room or study!

WHAT TO DO

PAINT IT. Changing the color of the walls can easily lend a big impact to small-scale renovations. It’s also the most ideal thing to do if you have a tight renovation budget.

DO IT

1. Thoroughly clean the walls with a vacuum or damp cloth. Remove cobwebs, dust, and other particles.

2. Line light switches, electrical outlets, and moldings with masking tape or painter’s tape to protect them from unwanted paint

EARTH BOUND

This is the third in a series of features on alternate building materials. The previous features were on straw bale and mud brick construction.

GETTING STARTED

Rammed earth is a material I have had experience with when constructing buildings. In fact, it all started back when I was still at school. During the Christmas school holidays a group of friends and I were into spending all our spare time building fortifications in and around where we lived in South Tamworth, NSW. Being a bunch of resourceful boys with access to open spaces and a plentiful supply of building materials from

Many of us prefer to build houses thorough, solid and capital. The house was built for centuries, of course, it must be brick.

□ irpich strength is one of the leading places in the building, yielding, perhaps, monolithic reinforced concrete. And he almost equally good resistance to both vertical and lateral sliding and shear load, which eliminates the need for reinforced seysmopoyasov, putting joists directly to the load-bearing walls, as opposed to the construction of the foam blocks. A good fire brick provides a high degree of fire brick buildings. A large heat capacity of the brick makes living in a brick house is very comfortable: in the heat of the thick brick walls keep their cool, and cold — cool slowly.

CASTLE

‘A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse.’ In retrospect it might have done Richard III more good if he had asked for a castle! These defensive medieval buildings are found throughout the country, and exploring the dark, dank passages, the scary heights of the look-out towers, the primitive living conditions and the dungeons where the prisoners were held makes you glad that you live in the twentieth century.

This castle, I am glad to say is a far more friendly building and gives great scope for playing ‘baddies and goodies’. It is made entirely from standard plywood sheets
