WHEEL

GOOD FUN!

PINK FLOYD’S CURIOUS LITTLE DITTY FROM 1967 IS EVOCATIVE OF THE BRITISH LOVE AFFAIR WITH BICYCLES. SINCE AT LEAST THE 1880S, WE HAVE BEEN BALANCING ATOP CHAIN-DRIVEN TWO WHEELERS FOR ALL MANNER OF ACTIVITIES. CYCLING REPRESENTS FREEDOM. HERE CW SALUTES THREE FIRMS THAT STILL MAKE BIKES IN BRITAIN.

Long before Sir Chris Hoy lifted British cycling to new heights, some sources believe, the first mechanically propelled two-wheeled contraption was built by a Scottish blacksmith called Kirkpatrick MacMillan in 1839. The penny-farthings of the mid-Victorian years were popular with daredevil riders despite their dangerous reputation, but it was not

Step-by-step: Get to know the colour wheel

1. In this colour wheel the complementary colours are on the opposite sides of the wheel. You can create grey colours by mixing complementary colours, so using the colour wheel as a guide doesn’t mean applying bright, shiny colours. Chromatic grey created by mixing colours usually looks better than grey made up of pure black and white.

2. For this example I want to paint an ore chasing a faerie. As I imagine the scene, there will be a dark background and a bright foreground, so instead of using a similar colour palette for all the image, I choose to

STAND AND PLAY

I have always admired the art of trials riding. The skill and finesse required to get the very best out of a trials bike is very impressive. The bikes themselves are aggressive and built for launching up rock faces and attacking some gnarly obstacles. I’ve spent very little time on one — maybe half an hour, max.

With this in mind, I was slightly nervous when Damien informed me of a day on board the Jota Gas and Gas Gas range with the guys who import these machines, the Hell Team.

Boothy and I headed to Pacific Park situated on

KTM 1190 Adventure

KTM offers its all-new 1190 Adventure in two formats, both of which were tested here. The base Adventure (pictured above) is more street-biased, with a 19-inch front wheel and geometry and suspension settings optimized primarily for paved roadways. The of road-intent Adventure R is equipped with a 21-in. front wheel, longer-travel suspension, different steering geometry, and crash bars for improved of-road capability.

An all-new frame contains a revised version of the 75-degree, 1195cc V-twin from the RC8R superbike, retuned for more midrange power efficiency; KTM says fuel economy is improved by 20 percent over the RC8R. Peak output is a

FIRE ENGINE

There can be few people who do not stop and look at a fire engine as it passes by. Who can ignore the urgent siren, flashing blue lights and highly polished red machine hurrying along the road to give assistance to someone somewhere? I find it most reassuring that throughout the country there are men, and now women too, willing and able to undertake dangerous rescue tasks for the general public. This fire engine is dedicated to all those who work in the fire and rescue services.

The toy is built from Nordic redwood and has a working steering wheel,

BRANDS HATCHING

Inspired by the successful, co-branded Harley-Davidson/Ford F-150 pickup, and in an effort to supplement a failing money supply from Washington D.C., Halliburping has gone green! The world premiere for the industry-leading regime change subcontractor’s first environmentally sensitive, alternate-fuel motorcycle, the coal-burning FLTHROWBAK, was held at Baghdad’s Armageddon, a biker bar-themed children’s self-esteem center. The entirely new model, an external combustion, single expansion, steam-driven touring bike, is not your typical rattle-clone retro.

Weighing in at a svelte 2400 pounds dry, the FLTHROWBAK’s tonnage rapidly increases as the gracefully stretched, 1500 psi-rated, 240-gallon boiler is filled with scale-fighting, Halliburping-supplied, depleted-Plutonium heavy water.
