Wild Weasels

As the last USAFE F-4G Wild Weasels return to the United States for the last time, Barry D Smith talks to the crews that flew the type with such success during the Gulf War.

ONE OF THE MOST dangerous missions of the Gulf War was the suppression of enemy air defences, both missiles and anti-aircraft artillery (AAA). Two squadrons of F-4G Phantoms were sent to the Gulf to combat radar-guided missiles and AAA. Known as Wild Weasels, they tracked and destroyed sites with radar-homing missiles. What follows are comments of several crew members assigned to the 561st Fighter Squadron based

Through the Lens of A Wild Child

What got you interested in photography initially, and how did you decide to make it your career?

I am basically a software engineer-turned-entrepreneur now looking after my family business of Shipping & Logistics. But for me, wildlife photography, and capturing God’s beautiful creations through my camera, is a serious Passion that keeps me alive in the true sense of the word. Since my childhood, I had always been interested in pets/animals, and about a decade ago, I started rescuing snakes in my locality. I eventually started photographing them, and slowly the inclination to capture images spread to all other flora

An opera director’s apartment in Cape Town is the perfect backdrop for his creative lifestyle

Matthew Wild was furiously packing his suitcase. His flight to Stockholm was at 4pm and it was already 3pm when we popped in for a chat at his apartment in Cape Town’s City Bowl. This isn’t the first time he’s travelled to Sweden in a rush. With a career in theatre direction, he’s taken his productions to playhouses as far removed as Australia and Dublin, and from his trips abroad he’s picked up a love for design, especially that from Scandinavia. When he gets back

from wild type to the Full Blue Rili. Neocaridina heteropoda.

The various captive-bred forms of Neocaridina heteropoda are very popular with “cherry shrimp” fanciers, who are often baffled by the names and histories of the many different strains. Here we trace how the Sakura strain has emerged from the Taiwan wild type and look at what is going on with the “Jelly Blue” strain.

Steffen, a friend and professional breeder, visited me to pick up some breeder tanks with gauze bottoms for his Cambarellus patzcuarensis Orange and Crystal Red shrimps. On that occasion, he brought along offspring of a wild-type strain of Neocaridina heteropoda. He handed me the bag of

Wild bees pollinate the flowers of the field twice as efficient as their domesticated relatives

Honeybee genus apis bred not only for the production of honey, but also for the pollination of fruit trees and plants. However, the second task is much better at their wild relatives. Lucas Garibaldi from the National University of Río Negro (Argentina) and fifty of his colleagues from various countries conducted a study of 600 pa experienced plantations. And proved that wild bees pollinating plants much more efficient home. They not only overfly twice flowers. Along with other insects — beetles and flies, hoverflies

«Wild petting» — a special unit of the U.S. Air Force

«Wild petting» (English Wild Weasels) — is a special unit within the U.S. Air Force, which are aimed at keeping the fight against the enemy air defense system, its liquidation radar. The first time these units have appeared during the Vietnam War, in the forthcoming without them did not break any large military operation with the role of the U.S. Air Force. This is not unusual, because destroying or causing «silent» enemy ground radars can provide for themselves air superiority and non-hazardous missions. Specifically, the military conflict in Vietnam was the first armed conflict in which aircraft had to deal
