The door to the underworld

Opening the Russian State Statistics Committee approved the list of languages and nationalities of the Russian Federation, you can learn many interesting things. For example, the fact that people live in Russia, ranking to the people of the mythical wizard — Chud.

Picture of a door closing in the rock passed Alexey Popov one of the witnesses in 2012

Most likely, this is a misunderstanding. In fact, according to legends of the north of Russia, these people went to live in a cave more than a thousand years ago. However, in Karelia and the Urals, and today you can hear eyewitness accounts about the meeting with the representatives of Tschudi. On one such meeting, told us the famous ethnographer Karelia, vice-president of the Karelian regional public organization "race" Alexei Popov.

— Alex, how plausible is the story of the existence of Chud, this mythical people?

— Of course, Chud existed in reality, and then walked away. But where — is not precisely known. Ancient legends say that the ground. And, oddly enough, but about the people, there is mention even in the "Tale of Bygone Years" Nestor: "… the Vikings from Zamora levied tribute Chud, Slovenes, and Meyrueis Krivichy, and the Khazars — from the field, the northerners took Vyatichi tribute by silver coin and VEVERITSA (protein) from the smoke. " Also from the annals known that in 1030, Yaroslav the Wise made a trip to the Chud "and defeated them, and put the city St. George." Today it is one of the largest cities in contemporary Estonia — Tartu. At the same time, in Russia there are many place names, reminiscent of the once mysterious people living here, but that's not the people, as though he had never had.

— How outwardly looked Chud?

— According to most researchers, anthropologists and historians, it was being looked so reminiscent of European gnomes. They lived on the territory of Russia until the moment when here came the ancestors of the Slavs and the Finno-Ugric peoples. At the present Urals, for example, is still portrayed in the legends of unexpected helpers of people — low white-eyed creatures that appear out of nowhere and help the travelers to get lost in the woods of the Perm region.

— You said that Chud left under the ground …

— If you summarize all the stories, it turns out that Chud went down to the dugout, which itself is dug in the ground, and then filled up all the entrances. However, the dugout could well be entrances to caves. So, it is in the underground caves and hid this mythical people. In this case, make a clean break with the outside world they will most likely not succeed. For example, in the north of the Permian Komi District, near Hayn, the stories of explorers and hunters can still find unusual bottomless pits filled with water. Local residents believe that it pits the ancient people, leading to the underworld. Water from them they do not take ever.

— And yet known places where Chud gone underground?

— The exact place today, no one knows, only known by many versions in which these places are located in the north of Russia and the Urals. Interestingly, the epics in the Komi and the Saami equally talk about the care of the "small narodtse" in the dungeon. If you believe the ancient legends, the Chud went to live in the excavation pit in the woods, hiding from the Christianization of those places. So far as the north of the country and the Urals, there are earthen hills and mounds, called Chudsko graves. They are supposedly "sworn" Chud treasures.

Strong interest in the legends of the Tschudi Nicholas Roerich. In his book, "The Heart of Asia," he bluntly tells how a Believer showed him a rocky hill with the words: "Here and gone underground Chud. It was, when he came to the Altai region to fight the White King, but did not want to live under Chud White king. Chud has left the ground and filled up the passage of stone … "However, as stated in his book, Nicholas Roerich, Chud should return to the ground, when they come to some teachers from Belovodye and will bring great science to mankind. Ostensibly then Chud leaves the dungeon and all its treasures. The great traveler even dedicated to this legend painting "Chud left the ground."

A possibly under Chud knew any other people, whose descendants now live safely in Russia?

— There is such a version. Indeed, the tradition of the Tschudi most popular just in the resettlement sites of the Finno-Ugric peoples, which include the Komi-Perm. But! There is one discrepancy: themselves descendants of the Finno-Ugric peoples have always talked about the Chud as about some other people.

— Legends, some legends … And there are real monuments left chudyu that can touch your hands?

— Of course there is! This, for example, well-known mountain Sekirnaya (historians also called Chudova Mountain) on the Solovetsky archipelago. Its very existence surprising, because the glacier, passing these places cut like a sharp knife, all the bumps landscape — and the big mountains here just can not be! So the 100-meter high mountain Chudova look on this smooth surface as clearly man-made object of some ancient civilization. At the beginning of two-thousand years, scientists have studied the mountain, confirmed that some of it is of glacial-prois
walking and partly artificial — large boulders, of which it is composed, not stacked randomly but in a certain order.

— And what, is credited with the creation of the mountain just Chud?

Archaeologists have long-established that the Solovetsky archipelago for centuries before the arrival of the monks here belong to local residents. In Novgorod, they just called Chud, neighbors called "sikirtya." The word interesting because it is translated from the ancient local dialect "skhrt" — is the name of a large mound of long elongated shape. So, haystack elongated right is called "stack." It is obvious that the ancient people of the neighbors called sikirtya for their lives in the "bulk Hills" — homes built improvised: moss, twigs, stones. Support this version of the ancient Novgorod — in their annals, they note that sikirtya live in caves and do not know of iron.

— You mentioned the mysterious meetings with chudyu in Karelia and the Urals today. Are they real?

— To be honest, I know a lot of these stories are always treated them with a pinch of salt. Until the end of summer 2012 there was no case that made me believe in the real existence in the mountains or under this mythical people. It was so. In late August, I received a letter with a photo of one of the ethnographer, who works part-time in the summer on a boat tour along the route Kem — Solovki. The information was so unexpected that I got in touch with him. So. The photo was a picture of a rock, in which discernible outlines of a large stone door. To my question, "What is it?" — Tour guide told a compelling story. It turns out that in the summer of 2012 he and a group of tourists sailed past the island of Russian Body. The ship was close to shore, and the people looked with pleasure picturesque cliffs. Tour guide at this time telling them stories about mysterious encounters with mythical chudyu-sikirtya. Suddenly, one of the tourists hysterically screamed, pointing to the shore. The entire group immediately turned his sights on the rock, which indicated a woman.

All the action lasted a few seconds, but the tourists had time to see how the rock closes a huge (three and a half meter) stone door, hiding behind a silhouette of a little creature. The guide is literally ripped from his neck camera and tried to take some pictures. Unfortunately, the shutter of his camera clicked when only remained visible silhouette stone door. A second later he was gone. It was the first mass observation point of entry into the dungeon Tschudi. After this event, to doubt the reality of the rocks and under the ground of the legendary people do not have to!
