The greatest battle in the world … forgotten all about that

The greatest battle in the world ... forgot all about thatIn the spring of 1399 a small, worn Horde raids Kiev just a few weeks turned into a large, multi-million dollar and multi-lingual site. Inspired by the Russian victory at Kulikovo field, military squads converged here from all over eastern and central Europe.

Glinted in the sun steel armor, heard a noise of large herds of horses, thirst-quenching off Slavutych; warriors sharpened blades.

Even the Crusaders came, and citizens with surprise considered outlandish armor of knights, had never goes so far deep into the Slavic lands.
A few months later there was a terrible accident …

….Only one small band of mounted warriors slipped away from death after a terrible battle. They fled, and "The Tatars followed suit chasing them, split by 500 miles, to hail to Kiev prolivasha blood, like a water."

So Nikon Chronicle mentions of the ruthless battle, which took place on the banks of a quiet Ukrainian Vorskla River more than 600 years to reverse, August 12, 1399. Details battle shrouded in mystery centuries, almost all ancient Russian warriors fell on the battlefield. This battle not mentioned in textbooks, it is not clear and precise location where it occurred.

The number of participants can only guess. Stately Lithuanian prince Vytautas, who led the brigade general of the Slavs, the Lithuanians and the Crusaders, the one who commanded the united army in the famous Battle of Grunwald, led by "exceedingly great", some princes with him was 50.

But in the famous Battle of Kulikovo (1380 year) Participated only 12 of feudal princes with combat squads! Recognizable Polish historian P. Borawski says battle the Vorskla River was naikrupneyshey in the fourteenth century! Why is it so not much is clear about this awesome in scale event?

In 1-x, witnesses actually left, because all died in the fierce cross section (so says the Ipatiev Chronicle). And in-2, it was a defeat — a terrible, bloody! Of such is not fond of writing … The particles of the Russian chronicles and works of Polish historians try to understand — what did all the same came out hot in the summer 1399? ..

The greatest battle in the world ... forgot all about that

600 years ago, Kiev was a small town, which was part of stateliness Duchy of Lithuania. The few inhabitants were engaged in the usual craft and trade in the once mighty capital of Russia, just beginning to recover after the Mongol invasions. Life is warm in the main at the hem and around the Caves. But in the spring of 1399, as we already know, the city was transformed.

It was heard speech Slavs and Germans, Lithuanians, Poles, Hungarians … Then came the troops of many European countries and principalities. Most of the army, which consisted in the main of the regiments of Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian lands, made on May 18, from Kiev.

Led her to Prince Andrew Olgerdovich Polotsk, Dmitry Olgerdovich Bryansk, Ivan B. Kiev, Gleb Svyatoslavovych Smolensky, Dmitry Kuchma Ostrog and many other princes and magistrates. The commander was majestic prince Lithuanian Vytautas.

Next to it (intricate twists and turns of history!) Was one Tokhtamysh Khan, who joined the Horde for a while, managed to burn Moscow, but soon he was thrown from the Khan's throne severe Edigeem. With the return of Vytautas Tokhtamysh intended for the imperial throne itself, and also led to a squad.

On the side of Vytautas participated in the campaign and about 100 heavily armed crusaders who came from Poland and the German lands. Every crusader were several squires, no worse than the armed knights. But most of the soldiers were Slavs, meeting virtually all parts of Russia. In general, the Slavic lands occupied 90 percent of the area Lofty Duchy of Lithuania, which is often called — Lithuanian Rus.

Slavic guards, remembering the glorious victory at Kulikovo field, calculated once and for all put an end to the Tatar-Mongol yoke. The army has been in service even artillery, which seemed not so long ago in Europe. The guns were quite impressive, though shot at, in the main, stone balls. So Makar, 600 years ago on the territory of Ukraine for the first time there was a roar of guns …

August 8 forces combined forces met on the Vorskla with the army of Timur-Kutluk, the leader of the Golden Horde Khan Edigeya. Confident Vytautas set an ultimatum demanding obedience. "Submit to me and you … and give me all ye who enter summer tribute and dues. " Horde just waiting approach allies of the Crimean Tatars themselves put a similar requirement.

August 12 began battle. Vytautas army crossed the Vorskla and stormed the Mongolian army. At first success was on the side of the joint forces, but then the cavalry Timur Kutluk managed to close the encirclement, and then began … In a dense melee battle artillery was powerless. Most of the princes and boyars were killed, "the very same Vytautas run to mala …"

Crusaders also fell heavily armed, do not resist the Mongol sabers. In pursuit of a small squad miraculously escaped Vytautas and devastating everything in its path, the Tatars came swiftly to Kiev. City withstood a siege, but had to pay "to recoup the 3000 Lithuanian rubles and 30 rubles slit okremo taken from the Caves Monastery." In those days it was a big amount.

So, from the Mongol yoke in that age could not get rid of. The defeat seriously affected the state of the Lithuanian Rus' flagging Vytautas soon had to admit vassal of Poland. After the Battle of Grunwald (in which, incidentally, was attended by 13 Russian regiments of Galich, Przemysl, Lvov, Kiev, Novgorod-Seversky, Lutsk, Kremenets), his position was somewhat better, and he even wanted to become a master, but was unable to counter the effects of the Polish king Jagiello . Vytautas died in 1430, and moved to Russia the Poles … And if the result of the Battle of the Vorskla River was the other? ..

Sadly ended this fight. About him not recall any monument or obelisk on one glorious Poltava land … The Battle of the Vorskla River, military historians are tied to the Lithuanian-Polish campaign, but that was the backbone of the Russian troops. "Fifty Slavic princes with guards!"

Their death has knocked down all of the following generations of the descendants of the famous Rurik. After a few years of the 10-s was neither Princes of Ostrog or Galician or Kiev or Novgorod-Seversky. Numerous descendants of Saint Vladimir, Yaroslav the Wise as if dissolved, lost in our land …

Cold-blooded Swedes forgets his own soldiers killed at Poltava — and the monument stands, and flowers every year bring. The British, who came under a murderous fire of the Russian artillery and suffered a bloody defeat in 1855, scoring at Balaclava, often come to visit the graves of their own Protz, who fell in the far Crimea. Beautiful snow-white British soldiers monument stands in the center of the field Vinogradova.

Wine farm workers sometimes embellish it, and carefully bend around the tractor while plowing vernal. Nearby, on the highway
— the obelisk, which opened in 1995. But after Poltava is located one and a half thousand kilometers from Sweden, Balaklava — and even further from the UK. And here, quite close, in the Poltava region lie in the land of the remains of our fellow citizens, and there is not the 1st of the memorial, nor of the 1st Cross, where died, presumably, more than 100 thousand soldiers!

There is much to ponder and then ashamed of us, the descendants …
