Intensive preparations for the assault on the Reichstag began on April 29. Lair of the Nazis, among other things, was also one of the main strongholds in the defense of Berlin. The Reichstag building on three sides was surrounded by the river Spree, with a width of 25 meters. All entrances to the building unhindered sweep all kinds of weapons, making it ideal for conducting all-round defense. Garrison Reichstag numbered from 1 to 3 thousand soldiers and officers, among whom were armed to the teeth with the SS, Volkssturm soldiers, pilots, gunners and cadets. The Germans were well prepared for the assault all the windows were closed up and turned into a narrow loopholes. The building was belted by several rows of trenches connected to the basements. In short, the defense of the Reichstag was very serious, it was a veritable fortress.
