Employees of the Russian pavilion at the World Expo specialized-2012 in the South Korean city of Yeosu took part in the environmental campaign "Clean up the black sand beach Munson," the press service of the Russian pavilion.
Munson coast is popular among Koreans by black sand beach, known for its healing properties. In summer there attracts people from all over the country. However, the influence of anthropogenic factors are not spared and this corner of the earth, which was literally littered with debris.
The initiators of the event were the organizers of the U.S. pavilion at Expo 2012, according to a press release.
"Pollution of the coastal zone is truly a global problem. I remember that during the filming of a documentary film in the Arctic, we have unexpectedly found in the middle of the stones sandal. Ocean unites us is much more than we used to think "- said the official speaker of the U.S. pavilion at Expo, the grandson of the famous explorer ocean Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Philippe Cousteau.
The action participants were divided into small groups and have cleared the area of the beach, collecting all kinds of trash: cigarette butts, bottles, corks, plastic bags, wire, broken glass and more.
After the event the mayor of Yeosu thanked participants.
"The whole world is facing the environmental crisis, and the beach Munson, which gradually eroded and polluted, is a confirmation of this fact. Your event clearly demonstrates the true meaning of the exhibition and will go down in the annals of the history of Expo," — he said.
According to Mark Germano, director of the U.S. pavilion at Expo 2012, in addition to the Russians in the environmental action was attended by representatives from more than 30 countries, whose pavilions at Expo deployed.
World Exhibition EXPO 2012 on the theme "The Living Ocean and the coastal zone: the variety of resources and their management" was opened to the public on May 12, her work will last until August 12. The exhibition is attended by 104 countries, 10 international organizations, including the UN, as well as numerous companies.
