Marshes of global importance to Russia can be saved only in reserves

Existing in Russia 35 wetland of world importance, which are vital to migratory birds, can be preserved only in the reserves, otherwise the safety of wetlands do not want to answer any federal or regional authorities, the expert organization Wetlands International and the United Nations Development Programme Tatiana Minaev.

World Day of wetlands designed to draw the world's attention on the value of wetlands to support the sustainability of our planet, is celebrated on February 2. Currently, the Ramsar Convention includes more than two thousand land in 164 countries covering about 198 million hectares. Russia joined the Convention in 1976. To date, 35 Russian wetland area of 10.3 million hectares of declared areas of global importance.

"When we started doing the inventory, it was found that 18 lands in Russia there are no provisions adopted by regional authorities — the only document that governs nature to them. If there is an infringement on the Ramsar site, the RPN refers to a constituent entity of the Russian Federation, and those in turn to federal authorities, as well as the status of a wetland of international "- added Minaev.
