According to the deputy executive director of the Daugavpils regional Duma Alexander Ajzbalts, the accident occurred due to damage to the tracks. At the scene, it was found that approximately half meter piece of rail was broken out. In general, he said, the leak was about 180 tons of chemicals and poses a serious threat to the environment if the effects of the disaster will not be quickly eliminated. There is a risk of contamination of ground water with chemicals, he said.

At the time of the emergency team, "Latvian Railway" continue to work at the scene and lift the tank train, to put them back on track. After that will be carried out repair railway tracks. Passenger transport accident has not affected, according to ITAR-TASS.
